What are the key drivers for the visitor centre at Acle? What demand does it meet when previous visitor centres have closed? Is funding from the Capital Budget, largely provided by the sale of the Ludham Field Base? is this the best use of that money?

Dear Batrabill, Having purchased the site to secure the moorings we are now in the process of bringing it up to standard and next year we will be installing electric charging points as well as repairing the piling. The site has huge potential which we are still exploring. Some of the key drivers are to provide modern facilities for those who moor at this important site – showers and toilets – a flagship visitor and education centre for the Broads as a whole, informing local people and visitors about the history of the Broads, the work of the Authority and the challenges the area faces. It can’t be seen as a direct replacement for the three visitor centres the Authority had to close several years ago because it would have a broader remit. Currently we don’t have a facility of this type and it would combine some of the features of a yacht station with a visitor and education centre. The funding for the building is not in place as yet and it will have to rely on external sources as well as the Authority’s own reserves to which the sale of the Ludham Field Base has contributed. The capital receipt from the sale of the Field Base can only be used for capital expenditure. We will continue in 2019 to investigate the potential for the development of the site and the value for money of any investment required. With Regards John

Most interesting reply John, The concept seems sound, and it would be great to see such improvements. What would concern me, as a long time lover of the Broads and particularly recalling the time when the old stores were open, is the concept of placing a much larger, taller architectural building on the site. IMHO a new building here should fit the surrounding landscape. Modest, of low height and incorporating the feel of the original site. It would be a great mistake to get this wrong! It would be brilliant to get it right! Far to often we see buildings which, may have architectural merit, yet simply reflect the self importance of the building, rather than it's surroundings.
