Hi Alicat.

I think that there is a previous thread about this and the relative merits of Freeview and satellite but I can’t seem to find it at the moment. My experiences and thoughts are as follows. We have Freeview and generally speaking get good reception although we did have problems in the south at Geldeston The things that affect how well the setup works are the input sensitivity of the TV and the gain of the aerial. I bought our 12volt tv from a company who supply the haulage industry and the aerial came from a specialist aerial company who advised me to get an aerial rated for low to medium signal strength. This aerial is about 1/3rd longer that the ones that you see on most of the boats as it has more elements. We do not have the aerial on a pole we just pop it onto the top of the boat (around 6ft from the water), when we are on our mooring at Broadsedge we put it on the jetty as the boat swings on its stern on mooring there in high winds. I believe that there is an amplifier device that you can put in the line to boost your aerial signal but I can’t remember its name, no doubt someone else will. A dish will also work BUT you do need a clear line of sight to the satellite, overhanging trees will block or dramatically reduce the signal level.

Best Regards

Bob

Blimey that was close !

I just took a moment to look up this Magic Wand and found my self in the Amazon web site.  Read through the customer reviews and apart from about two out of eleven the general concensus is that it is a pile of junk.  Has anyone actually managed to get a digital signal by using this.   At Broadsedge we could get freeview no trubs but at Richardsons only the analogue will work. How Hill perfect.   River Ant rubbish. Any suggestions - all clean please.

My guess is that those who thought it a pile of junk were trying to use it with it's own stick aerial attached, which is probably fine if you live half way up a tower block in a city. I've had mine for about 3 years now and previously used it for analogue, but now digital. By unplugging the little wand bit and plugging the aerial co-ax in I get a superb picture.

There is an argument that says if you amplify a bad signal, you get a worse one. If however the signal is just weak due to insufficient aerial height for example, then these little things do a fantastic job!

Am I correct in assuming that this booster has to be plugged into the mains.

No, they run on 2 AA batteries and they reckon they'll last about 5000 hours. I've not replaced mine in 3 years!
Have a look on ebay, I got mine there and it cost about a tenner.

I have looked on Ebay and there is a magic wand with the description of - set top aerial battery powered - sells for about £9.    Am I barking up the wrong tree.  I dont know how to attach a link but if someone has one and can post a link so as to enable me to know what I am looking for it would be much appreciated.   Thought I would get it as a little tree present for the boat.
