I need to replace a section of the rubbing strake (side fendering), on my Viking 24, before it goes in the water.

The fendering was damaged by the previous owner, and I knowingly bought the boat with this minor damage, with a view to repairing it.

As I understand it, Viking Mouldings will not supply me as an 'end user' with the materials. However, Viking don't manufacture the material, and as such, must buy it it from an external supplier.

Can anyone advise me, where I can obtain a length of the correct aluminium moulding, and grey PVC insert.

I have attached a picture showing the aluminium moulding, PVC insert, and the damaged area.

Many thanks

Dave

Hi Dave
Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the new boat.

Your fendering could be a Wilks profile. I think you will have to replace the entire insert unless you have a join at the bow. Is it grey or faded black ?

If it was mine, I would use it as it is. Then when you next have it out I would remove the aluminium moulding and get a fibreglass specialist to repair the stress cracking and then fit the new moulding and insert.

Wilks Link. Look at Aluminium.

I have the gelcoat (stress cracking) repair in hand with an expert, who will do this when the damaged section of fendering is removed.

There is a already a maunfacturer's join in the aluminium profile, just few inches to rear of the damaged area, and I'm quite happy to put a new section in, and have another join. I realise that this will mean two joins in the PVC insert, but I think I can live with this, as it would be better than it is now.

The PVC Insert is Grey.

I have been in touch with both Trend Marine, and Wilkes, who tell me that they have never supplied these particular parts to Viking.

The lass at Wilkes, very kindly checked their records back to 2003.

Although the Wilkes profiles look the same, it is unlikely that they will be a direct match.

I could of course have the whole of the aluminium profile, and PVC insert replaced, around the entire perimeter of the boat, but that's and expense I'd rather avoid.  Gasp

Hi, Dave, I was going to suggest that you pop in to Sutton Staithe Boatyard, if you're local, as they have got a Wilks sample board in their office. I've just been to have a look at it and all the inserts are black. Not much help then (unless you're going to go down the "replace it all" route.

From your initial post it doesn't sound as if you've actually contacted Viking about this but have had info from a third party. If so, it might be worth contacting them. Even if they won't supply you directly, you might be able to order it via a boatyard/chandlery. It does seem odd, though, 'cos on their website they do say that they will provide spares and/or parts.

Hi
Vikings attitude is very surprising that they wont help you.

If you join the rubber insert it will shrink, I don't know any glue that will keep a join together.

Seals direct list some mouldings.

Thanks guys, your input is much appreciated.

I have now asked the workshop at WRC to try and source the material, and do the work, as I can see this 'dragging on', and what's left of summer, slipping away.

BTW, I also tried VETUS to see if they had supplied Viking with the fendering, but the answer was again, no.

I do realise that the PVC insert will expand and contract (shrink), but was hoping to inject some grey silicone sealant into the joint, to hopefully allow for this movement.

The only potential difficulty is if Viking and their supplier have changed the profile since 2006.

I'll pass the Seals Direct 'link' onto WRC in case they want to try there.

Fendoff is pointing you in a good direction. Phil at Seals Direct is very helpful and will promptly send out samples. They have a vast array of stuff and I'd be surprised if he could not help. All the products are viewable on the website link that Fendoff provided as well.

Hi Dave

Just a couple of thoughts, you could try asking on the Viking Owners website. www.vikingowners.org.uk Found it most useful when we had 'Blue Skies' a Viking 26' Aft Cabin. The other would be to contact Howard Stokes on 01234 261415 as he deals with Vikings and is most helpful.

Hope that helps.

John

Kind regards, John(Captain Joshie)& Jo, 'Rosie L'Ondine' L799.

Edited to add Viking Owners website address... ooops!

Hi John

I have 'posted' the same question on the Viking Owners Club forum, but as yet no response.

I'll wait and see what the WRC's workshop are able to come up with on Monday.

Many thanks

Dave

Vikings responce is as I would expect, they are protecting their dealer network, you cant order spares direct from a motor manufacturer, only via a dealer.
