Hi everyone, I was looking for a Norman 22/3, but I was just wondering if there were anybody here who owns one and if so could tell me anything about them.
I've seen some pics and from what I could see they're pretty good looking boats and seem very spacious.

Norman's are at the "affordable" end of boating AJ. When you consider that the last one was built in 1982 then its clear they are tough and have stood the test of time. However, most of them are narrow beam, 6' 10", built for the canals, so spacious they really are not. A 22/23/24 makes a good 2 berth for extended cruising but for any more you really need to be very friendly! There are three wide beam models, 22, 266 and a 29, there were not that many built and they hold a good price when they come up for sale. There are a few 22 wide beams on the Broads. The other two wide beams also turn up as Bates Astral who took over the moulds.
This page describes the range of boats....

and you will find some for sale on this one.....

Any questions, just ask.

I was particually interested in the Norman 22 mk1, but before I do anything about it, I'm going to have to go and see one up close properly.

Norman Cruisers factory was situated a couple of miles down the road from me. I can well remember walking past the place after school, with the doors open the aroma of fibreglass could be smelt all the way home ! I always wondered what happened to them, looks like they went the way of a lot of similar small builders. Their old factory (a single story large unit) is now a leisure centre!

Just for a change amongst Thatchers carnage, Norman actually sold up voluntarily. The market for cruisers was shrinking as fast as folks disposable income at the time. They had an offer they couldn't refuse from the leisure group mentioned for the premises.

Norman's certainly have an avid following but there are a number of other boats that you might want to look at which offer affordable boating.

You might also want to think about boats from Viking, Freeman or at Elysian 27's.

Walton marine at Wroxham are advertising a couple of slightly larger boats at decent prices at the moment, I've almost been tempted to head over for a look myself. A Creighton 25 GRP and a Powles 30 timber which is a part complete project but looks like it might be ready to go, needing a fair amount of cosmentic attention which you could undertake at your leisure.

However hard i try I can't quite get this boat buying twitch out of my system!

Regards

Paul
