Sunday 8th April.

Yo!!  What a cracking day!  Here we are at the Maltsters, having had a glorious two days so far.  We left Silverline about 2.45 p.m. yesterday and headed for Burgh Castle.  Got there without any problems at about 5.30 p.m.  Dinner was two ready meals from Tesco’s that we had brought with us.  (Lamb, roast spud, peas, carrots and a Yorkshire pud!!).  Had a quick pint of extra cold something or other in the Fisherman’s pub and Brenda duly had a Bacardi Breezer.  Before long it was time to hit the sack, so to speak, ready for the early dash across Breydon in the morning.

Up and about at 6.30 a.m.  What the heck – ice on the roof and decks!!!!??? Gasp   Now I did think it was  bit chilly first thing when I woke up but not that bad!!  On hearing about the ice, Brenda decided to stay in bed until I had put the heater on and the boat was a bit warmer!!  I had worked out (using the Shorebase tables and the Hamilton’s slack water calculator and Broads tide calculator that we had bought last year), that we needed to leave Burgh Castle at 7.30 a.m.  Hmmm – we set off and I was a bit concerned that we were the only ones!!  I didn’t have long to wait – as we were about half way across Breydon – I looked behind to see a small flotilla of boats following.  We passed under
the bridge and started looking for the infamous yellow post to turn left at.  (I reckon it’s about time that someone gave that darn post a new lick of paint ‘cos we only spotted it when we saw the entrance to the Bure!!).

Ok, we had already decided that our first stop was going to be Ranworth so we chugged along quite happily, taking turns at the wheel/helm/ steering thingy.  The next couple of hours were spent in me having a wash/shave etc, Brenda sorting herself out and me sorting out “Food a la Hoof” (bacon sarnies and a cuppa on the move!!).  Now suitably fed and watered we passed by the Ferry at Stokesby and continued our trek sort of westwards.  I hadn’t spotted any other forumites so far (apologies if I did miss anyone!) but on passing by the boatyard at Acle, I spied Silver Dream (Simon) coming towards us (not literally!!)  I must confess – it wasn’t until after you passed us Simon that I realised it was you – but I did wave honestly!!  Oh, did I mention that this stretch of the Bure was becoming like the M25 on a bad day??  Boats everywhere – there certainly wasn’t as many this time last year!!

Next to pass us going eastwards was Steve and Vicky in Schatz followed closely by Paul (NCSL).  I was wide awake by now LOL so managed to utter some form of greeting to both of them as they passed!!  I didn’t spot anyone else (was too busy dodging those rag and stick thingy’s that suddenly appeared two abreast from around a bend!!)

We arrived at Ranworth at about 1230 p.m. to see hundreds (well it looked like hundreds!!) of boats moored up or “rafting” on the Broad or just chugging around trying to find a vacant slot!!  I also spotted the good Admiral what looked like getting ol’ Joshua ready for a chug out.  (Sorry for the yelled greeting Richard – hope your chugging along nicely!!) Oo-er Mr Mannering – heeeeelp!!!  Not to be outdone, I managed to do a few twirls with the boat near to the staithe and finally as a boat left, I reversed in to the newly vacated slot without even so much as a bump or sneeze!!  (All those dry runs with a toy boat in the bath did pay off then!!  LOL ).  By now Richard had set off and we last saw him disappearing up the dyke towards the Bure!

Having sorted ourselves out and secured the boat, we made a bee-line for the Maltsters (what else???).  To say the pub was a tad busy is to put it mildly!!  Brenda and I got our drinks (thanks to Tony for changing the barrel of Wherry so quick!!) and settled in the corner out of the way.  We are now hopefully sitting at a table waiting for our food!!

More to follow!!

Saw Josh on her moorings earlier this week Roy, she's looking good, caught the boss Friday at the Ferry, he was driving though so the Stella stash is intact.. Playful Wink

I must confess I am slightly confused!  If you arrived at Ranworth at 1230hrs on Sunday (yesterday) you would have indeed passed Silver Dream - she would have been moored stern on to the island at Ranworth.  Indeed, Steve & Vicky were there with us and set off some time before we did.

We did pass through Acle some time in the early afternoon as we followed David (Antares_9) down to Stokesby but not until long after you would have been moored on Ranworth staithe.

It must have been an imposter.  Wink

Actually, I'm very confused now!  I did see a boat with forum logos on as I passed through Acle but couldn't make out the name on the logo and the pilot didn't appear to have twigged to mine (or that they'd just passed David & Rachel) so it does sort of make sense, but you couldn't have been at Ranworth at 1230 (if it was you) because we didn't make Stokesby 1430 at the earliest as we were aiming to arrive as boats were leaving after lunch.
