On Our recent trip to the broads we spent a night at Coltishall and decided to frequent the Rising Sun for the evening.
2 reasons for this, they sell Woodforde's (Norfolks Finest) and they have a pool table which is usually quiet.
Bad start, they had ran out of Woodforde's but the pool table was free and the alternative ales were more than palatable (Deuchars and Hobgoblin) and the girl behind the bar pleasant and friendly.
A pleasant evening was being had by all until about 10:15 I went up to the bar and ordered a pint of foaming ale and a dark rum and coke. The obliging barmaid poured my pint and the rum and was about to add a slash of coke when the manager (I presume it was the manager) walked past and snapped at the barmaid not to add the slash but serve only the bottled coke.
My heckles immediatly raised I insisted that I have a slash of coke as I had been served this all evening.
They relented and I was served a splash of coke but was charged £1 over and above what I had been paying all night.
Needless to say we then alighted to the Kings Head.
Now I know £1 is not a lot but I felt ripped off and its the principal that annoys me.
Its this attitude of ripping off which although rare puts Holidaymakers off the broads.
As a long time boatowner on the broads I'm afraid its the Kings Head for me from now on when in Coltishall.

You mean the other Starboard then...

Very close to my pet hate of being charged for Lime in Lager. Our local now charges 35p over and above the pint. I too have voted with my feet and made sure the landlord knows why.

I wouldn't mind if he was using measured pints and adding the lager to it, but your telling me that to add 50ml of lime in place of the same amount of lager cost an extra 35p! That means if a pint is £2.40 he is selling lime jiuce at £11.10 per litre. And it's not even Roses!

Now, to keep this on topic about the Norfolk Broads before I get Modded out by Roya, anyone know anywehere on the rivers that doesn't charge for lime in lager!

Lime and lemonade in your beer! Dear me, girls Wink

Seriously, It really galls me that businesses think they can get away with blatantly ripping people off simply because they are on holiday. I've never had a problem with  Norfolk's inflated beer prices: if they all charge over the odds then there must be a reason (I'm from up North) and that's what I pay, happily.

There are establishments, however, that will refuse to sell you a sandwich and a plate of chips during the school hols, but are happy to do so when it's quieter and they need your custom. Like others, I will vote with my feet and refuse to use some establishments. If we all do so, they will soon get the message.

I stayed at the Kings Head at the beginning of June & it was great. Had a drink in both pubs & the difference in atmosphere was amazing. You don't need me to say which was full & which was half empty.
