Just realised that, having asked questions about Catfield and Waxham, I never reported back. We took a Judith from Martham Boats (highly recommended!) up both in October. Catfield was absolutely no problem and turning at the staithe was very simple for Judith at 33'. It would no doubt be more difficult if the moorings were crowded, but even so I'm sure it would be manageable. Although the dyke is dead straight it is very attractive. Getting up Waxham Cut was also no problem although it is much narrower than Catfield Dyke. I can imagine that wider boats (Judith is under 10') might struggle in the summer. It was impossible to turn before the bridge, so we had to go under. Not sure what the clearance is but I'd estimate a bit less than 7' and all the ivy and other plants hanging down make it seem much lower. Turning in the basin was a struggle, especially as there was quite a strong wind, but we walked her round OK (there is a notice asking you to do this to avoid prop wash damage). But I'm sure it will be easier next time now we know what to expect! I thought Waxham Cut was less attractive than Catfield, but definitely worth the trip. Brograve Mill was quite eerie in the early morning light, with cormorants perched on the skeletons of the sails.

Brograve Mill is a particular favourite of mine. Often rather dark and moody.

We often spend a night at brograve mill as it is so peacefull there. We made it up there in july in a 37ft x 12ft boat no problem, turned easily at the mill but we never venture up to the bridge now, last time was years back in a safari.

Has the weed been cleared from the top of Waxham Cut? We travelled the full length of the cut a few years ago, and turned round after passing under the bridge. We had so much weed wrapped around the prop that we had almost no propulsion until finally making it back to the bridge (with enough power on to normally do 5 MPH, but moving as though we were just drifting).

I would love to venture up there, but owning a Birchwood 22 with a hard top it will take some rather drastic surgery to get underneath Potter Heigham bridge. Chris J

Not too far a stroll to the pub either along the footpath but can be a bit of a weave back though. If you are lucky you can hear the bitterns 'boom' there too,not too sure if it was my eye sight or the ale but i thought i saw some cranes flying there too.

It was orange as we entered the cut, but seemed to gradually clear as we travelled upstream. Oh, and to answer an earlier question we didn't encounter much, if any, weed

Dragging up an old thread here, but anyone been up either / both of these dykes recently? We're going to be mainly North of That Bridge this weekend (Silver Jubilee and Bootlegger) and may plan a bit of an expedition, into one of these unknown (to us) backwaters, though perhaps a dingy exploration might be the best plan? I've taken both Lullaby and Wood Violet up Waxham in recent years. If there's nobody on the private moorings just below the bridge, you can just turn Lullaby (29ft) without dropping the mast to go through. If you do go up there it's much easier to turn a yacht than a stinkie, as you've got a quant!
