My wife and I are currently renting a house in Norwich whilst we look for a place to buy. We are interested in one in the Stalham area and I have a query about how to travel from there to Norwich. I am in my mid 60's and have an old git's bus pass and would thus prefer to travel in by bus. Is there a service from Stalham to Norwich where I can use the pass?

Alternatively, if I were to travel to North Walsham and get a train in (using my senior railcard), how much is it to park at or near North Walsham station?

Thanks.

Hi and welcome, for starters, try this site www.travelineeastanglia.co.uk/

If you want to get the train, I would suggest Hoveton and Wroxham station into the city. Not sure about parking in Hoveton but you can probably park for free.

Best route though is drive to Sprowston Park & Ride and get the bus in.

Stalham is a very pleasant area to live IMHO.

First bus operate daily services to Stalham and your pass can be used after a certain time if thats still in operation.  Used to be the 12A.

Thanks for the replies.
Is that a direct service all the way?
Also, I noticed that there is a coach service. Would they accept old git bus passes on that?

Looks like the 12 /12 a service has been cut back to
Wroxham to Stalham after all since 2011 but the old
timetable still on line typical of First

Hi

I live in Stalham and use the bus sometimes to get to the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital as it's easier than trying to park the car at the hospital!! Mad

First Bus did change things a while ago it used to be one bus through to the hospital. then they stopped the through service at Norwich Castle Meadow and you had to swap buses, not a real problem as the bus to the hospital runs every 10 mins or so from Castle Meadow. Then in their (First Bus) wisdom that made the route from Stalham to Wroxham to Norwich two separate bus numbers 12/12A 14/14A !! BUT they are the same bus, it just changes numbers when it stops in Wroxham!! Which is nuts, you just sit on the same bus and off you go again. Why??? Don't ask me as I have no idea!! Confused.

The other bus companies while useful don't have a frequent service, so only the First Bus would be the obvious choice.

So Stalham to Norwich on the 12/12A - 14/14A (same bus just stay on it!).

the difference between the on suffix and A suffix is just the route to get to Wroxham and Norwich. For example the 'faster' route comes out of Stalham and goes direct on the A149 to Wroxham, the 'slower' route goes out of Stalham and goes via Catfield - Ludham - Horning and then Wroxham.

The timetables are on the First Bus website, but it runs roughly hourly.

Hope this hasn't confused you to much.

Stalham is a great place to live by the way!

John.

Spot on advice from Captain-Joshie.  I live in Stalham for part of the year and use the 12/12A - 14/14A buses.

They start from Castle Meadows in the city and also serve the rail station in Norwich.

A note of caution, the Stalham to Hoveton leg of the route goes over two distinctive routes so make sure you know which journey it will be otherwise you could be waiting at Yarmouth Road for a bus that has actually gone the other way via Wayford Bridge.  To be on the safe side always aim to catch the bus at Stalham High Street opposite the chip shop.

You can also get the bus to Great Yarmouth from Stalham.

Many thanks for the friendly and detailed replies.
I can see that, were we to move to Stalham, that we could access Norwich should we need to.
We are going back to explore the area tomorrow morning and also to discover where the nearby nicer beaches are. On our first visit to Stalham in Saturday, we really liked the town itself.
