Thanks for putting this up, I got mine this morning but at least we can all now discuss.

Is it me or does it seem a little odd that there is a genuine discussion between three price increases. The variance between the three on the illustration of good size boat is over a total of £6.40 !?!?!? ( Page 3 )

As long as the diffeence is spent in favour of boating, charge the higher surely ? Or do others really resent every pound the BA take ?

Hi
I think this leaflet does an excellent job of selling any tolls increase on the Broads for next year. What it doesn't say is that originally they wanted 13 % this year and for the next 4 years after that. It nearly doubles the toll in 5 years. Now does it seem fair ?

More info and the original questionnaire is here,

http://www.broads-authority.gov.uk/broads/downloads/comms/authority/Agenda%20and%20Reports/2005/30-09-05/Navigation%20Tolls%202006-07-The%20Priorities%20for%20Additional%20Expenditure%20and%20Strategy%20for%20the%20next%205%20years.doc

This says that years 2 to 5 will be 6 % above inflation, but their inflation rate is not the easy one that most of us understand. It's a complicated formula.

The leaflet does also identify another problem with the tolls, a topper dinghy worth £1000 pays £ 41.43 at present a Sovereign 34 worth £120,000 and with an engine pays £212.80, the engine maybe a 50 hp but the same sized boat could have twin diesels with 400 - 800 hp does it still seem fair to the owner of the dinghy ?

The Broads Authority should do a survey on the 85 % of people who didn't respond to the poll because they knew it wouldn't make to much difference to an Authority not elected by a democratic process. Thank goodness there are some sane members on the Committee that realise we don't all have deep pockets.

Thanks for that link Fendoff, the one figure I have been looking for is the actual cost of collecting a toll. If I'm paying £46 for a dinghy how much goes towards good causes Frown

Thanks for the link Fendoff.

Hmmm.....it would appear that you are right, the leaflet does do an excellent job of selling any tolls increase on the Broads for next year, I was sold. Your link did open my eyes a little further. I am now concerned at the rate of increase they are looking for over the next five years. The formula for inflation is an interesting one, I should try it on my boss for a pay rise. Wink  I understand that money is required and that there are important jobs to be done but as you point out our pockets are not bottomless. As  boat owners, I have said before, we form part of the attraction, we should not be solely responsible for the upkeep. When the money from Defra runs out.........God help us.  Among other things, I  find the reporting of response by boat type a little odd as many row boats are tenders of motor boats and many motor cruiser owners also sail !?!? They are not different breeds necessarily.

It is a shame that only a small percentage responded to the questionnaire, resigned apathy will not change any thing.

I shall follow this with interest...
