Went to see the folk at our old mooring place today at Oby,  (right by Thurne Mouth)   Beside moorings he also has static caravans and a very good fishing lake with Carp up to 30lb.   He was telling me that he has been having big problems with Otters getting into the lake and eating his prize carp!!   He has had to surrand the whole lake with an electric rabbit fance to keep them out.   Apparently there are now a lot of otters on the Northern rivers having been released a couple of years ago on Barton Broad and they breed very quickly.    The ones in his lake were the size of a Labrador dog!

A bad day on the water is better than a good day in the office.

Simon,

We've got a couple at our moorings at Broads Edge (Stalham) There were some young ones about earlier as well on the stretch where the branch for Sutton is.

Hi
Moving away from the otter subject, the fishing lake sounds good.I looked at the one near Potter Hiegham but a bit too far to walk from the moorings with fishing tackle,is this any closer ?

Hi Simon

I'm not surprised they were the size of Labrador's if they're eating 30lb carps!!

I have to admit that I absolutely adore otters, am I likely to see any on the Southern Broads when we go in September?

It also got me wondering if there are any coypus still in existance on the Broads. I know that they were a huge problem, but what impressive looking creatures!

Regards - Carol

Glad to say that Coypu have all gone now, they were eradictated in the l;ate 1980's. What we do have on the southern rivers starting to cause problems are mink.

I'm not aware of otters on the southern rivers yet, does anyone else know of any?

Hi Boatboy

Funny you should mention Mink - I saw one crossing the A1066 Diss - Thetford road last week. Didn't actually realise what it was until I described it to my husband. I presumed that it must have come from the Waveney although a little far from home!

Re Coypus - I seem to remember there being a cartoon strip about coypus in a Beccles/Bungay based magazine (I think) in the early 80's. Does anyone else remember it or am I just imagining things?

Ah but ‘Cuddles’ is a virtual coypu so not likely to cause a population explosion even if he's got a 'Camilla' in there helping him now I'm on broadband Smile  . There are Otters around Wheatfen and Rockland Broad. Others live on the upper Chet around Sisland Carr and the one I saw was near Hardley flood.

About 10 years ago, I remember regularly seeing a pair of Mink, in Oulton Dyke.

Glad this post came up as Shirley put it down to an overdose of Norfolks finest the night before when I said I had just seen an otter at Broadsedge.
