Did anyone in the forum hire from Sun Boats near Acle Bridge? In particular do you have any knowledge of Sun Glory and Sun Mist which were subsequently to be operated by Porter and Haylett? Did they start life at Acle? They were wodden boats with a strong similarity to the Hampton Safari 25

No Sun Glory, see the Hampton safari site if you want the full details.

According to Craige and the owner we know that Sun Glory was available from P&H however it predates, I think, 1970 was it anywhere before then? If it was Sun Boats best starting point built for/by them or what?

Bill. As far as I know these craft were built by P & H for their own fleet. Sun Boats craft ended not started with 'sun'.

Well I hired 'Sunflower II' back in 1978, from the yard by the rail bridge at Wroxham.

The design was very similar to the Hampton Safaris, but they were all wood and the saloon roof slid in two halves...

edit: I've just noticed, looking at my own photo, that the lid actually slid in three sections...

Just to increase the confusion, I'm not convinced any of the group are Hampton 25s - they're all 26ft 6ins x 10ft making them substantially larger - all look to have a GRP hull, but I can't be certain.

I'll admit the 'one' class I have should really be 2 - Paul, can I use your photo to illustrate the second class please?

Class 1 (3 panel windscreen and split canopy)
Sunflower 1 & 2 - both were at Porter & Haylett in 1970 and their reg.nos suggest they were built in the late 60s
Sunmaid definitely built in 1969, but was at Silver Mist Boats, Horning in 1971, didn't move to P&H until 1973

Class 2 (2 panel windscreen and one piece canopy)
Sun Glory - built 1971, a line drawing in the 1971 Hoseasons catalogue for P&H
-------------
Incidentally - the 22ft wooden craft Sunelda/Sunestra, there was a third based at MSA Marine in Wroxham in 1971
