The loss of a boatyard facility, especially to accommodate new holiday cottages may well serve the owners of the nearby pub very nicely (no connection with Mr King as far as I know) but is not good news for boats, boaters, boating.

We don't get up there much but I know plenty of folk who will be stuck without that yard and its facilities, and what with other small yard losses over recent years, this is a dreadful shame for no good reason in my view. There was a working business there. Very sad.

Mark Kings father used to own the Ferry Marina, Ferry boatyard as it was then.

Further to my earlier post, the people who have taken over Wayford Marine,  have informed our friends that they will be improving the facilities such as  the toilets with a new shower block, moorings, electricity supplies and the yard in general, including a new boardwalk along the river front and want to operate a fully operational Marina and boatyard repair service. They have made no mention of developing the river front with holiday lets.        Smile

If that is the case while I feel sympathy for Jon it is generally good news.

If that is the case , and the long term plan,  then that is at least good news for boaters.

I don't know Jon or anyone else who is part of that team, nor the ins and outs of why he has to go if the boatyard facility is to remain. I hope the impact of all these changes can be handled in the best way possible for all concerned. And I accept  the earlier comment that speculation rather than fact is not helpful, as I have unintentionally demonstrated that now myself!

Just to let you know it is fact, as the letter that my friend received  was read out to me and I have said in my post exactly what was told to me.  Once again I wish Jon & Teresa all the very best for the future.  Smile

Mark was responsible for the development at Martham Ferry - had a few run ins with the planning department over that and more than a few with the residents downstream over parking and other issues.

Probably won't do the area much harm and under current BA rulings he will be required to keep a boatyard on that site - although it does not have to be the same size

I met with Jon back in March he did not mention closing and this was a yard that seemed to fit my needs when a mooring spot became available

Sadly I heard (via an FB post yesterday) ie public domain that over 100 boats have been crushed at the yard. No idea whether any engines/gearboxes etc have been saved.
