Its a couple of years since i visited Stalham and thought it was sad to see the Maids Head all boarded up, I hate seeing pubs closed and boarded being a CAMRA member, it spoils the village and is becoming an eyesore, though i must admit a lot of properties in stalham are closed(the mighty tesco strikes!!!)

I asked the girl in stalham shoes who told me it closed a couple of years ago and had a lot of underage drinkers frequenting it.

Can anyone shed more light on this pub?

I have enclosed some pics of it in Sept 2005.

If it's any consolation the Adnams pub (The Swan I think) is excellent both for food and Broadside. Also conveniently just a few yards along a path from the Tesco's car park (Whoops! shouldn't have said that)

Afraid to say Stalham planners lost their way some time ago not just with the Tesco development but also with their traffic management scheme. The infrequent visitor might be forgiven for thinking that they were not welcome. Whilst it was possible 'to pass through' there was indeed 'passing trade' now it's rather different. What was needed then was additional off street parking and small high quality retail units to build up a local character to the town centre.

Unlike Loddon it is not well placed for the holiday trade with the bypass between it and the river. Had the new road been looped round the north of the town rather than allowed to take the easy route along the old railway line I am sure the picture would have been very different. Mixed development would have spread south until it joined up with the boatyard and staithe development. Indeed stalham might well have looked today rather like a Beccles in the North.

As it is it has always struck me as being one of those places which is so near and yet so far.

"Actually I'm very good at going sideways until I want to moor that is!!!"  Bill...

Kind of stuck in an 80s time warp where as everywhere else has moved on, sad to see because i have a soft spot for stalham.

I wonder what the locals think of what has gone on in their own village?

I've spent some time today reading through the Broads Authority Issues and Options Report on their Core Strategy for the future of planning in the Broads. It's a frightening document, full of gobbledegook and obfuscation. It must be time that we, who pay planners wages, insisted that they used plain English and were clear and concise about their concepts and intentions. And if they don't, we should, through the politicians, whom we vote into office and whose allowances we fund, reduce their numbers and clarify their objectives.

It seems to me you get the civil servants you deserve.

If you want to read the document it's on the BA website under "consultations".

Phil
