Next to Hunter's Yard in Womack Water is the Broads Authority Base. Have you ever wondered what goes on inside?
Well. The Ludham Archive Group organised a visit this week and a big crowd of us turned up for a talk and guided tour.
The base is home to 2 patrol boats used by Navigation Rangers. It is also the base for the conservation rangers who do things like building board walks and stiles.
There are a few offices and a meeting room inside with an excellent view from upstairs. The bulk of the building is taken up with a workshop used to service BA boats. This was empty as the work is done in the winter. In any event, the work is going out to tender this year so may not be done there any more. There are also woodwork and metalwork shops used by the Conservation Rangers. We looked at boardwalk materials.
The place was largely deserted and I gather that this is normal in summer when everyone is out on site. There is more action there in the winter.
Amusingly, we noticed that the Broads toll plaque on the Suction Dredger moored in the basin had expired. We were able to report this to a Navigation Ranger on the spot. The dredger has been out all winter mud pumping and restoring Crome's Broad.
A few pictures follow:
