Good afternoon Forum Members,

I thought you would be interested to know that yesterday Defra published correspondence between Julian Glover, who is leading the National Park Review, and Michael Gove.

Here is the link:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/designated-landscapes-national-parks-and-aonbs-2018-review

Much of the content is not a surprise and has been well trailed in the informal feedback from the Review Team.

Nevertheless it makes interesting reading and a foretaste to the final report.

With regards
John

Seems to be an amalgamation of nps and AONBs....personally I think they should stay separate as they are by definition different. The notion that the ‘bnp’ could extend its ops to include chunks of north Norfolk if the idea became reality is worrying, the AONBs should be left as they are, branding them would spoil north Norfolk for me. Leave nature be.

Good evening turnoar

I don’t think the Review Team is suggesting that national parks and AONBs should be amalgamated.

However personally I would support:

(i) Closer working between national park authorities and AONBs;
(ii) More resources for AONBs; and
(iii) AONB partnerships made statutory consultees for planning applications in or impacting on their area.

Regards
John

In principle I have no problem with the correspondence. It's what might happen next that concerns me and that is what I shall be watching with a passion. The Broads as an area is absolutely unique, long may it continue as that. I personally welcome the AONB tag, a tag that allows us to maintain our identity. I do not welcome the dilution of the very character of the Broads in actually becoming just another legally designated national park, nor do I welcome the additional controls that that designation would force upon the Broads. Being just a member of the national parks family is a good place to be, long may that continue.

Dear Mick, just an early heads up on what will be in my report. Firstly there were only 2500 respondents. We managed to lose the more contentious ones. Secondly, more money is needed in real terms and sustained for a further 5 years. We know you should be able to fight this one off and blame Brexit for it. Finally, we think the current system of governance should be reformed. I’m afraid this slipped through on comments about The Broads National Park. It doesn’t matter really as it is like turkeys voting for Christmas and nothing will happen anyway. On the bright side we have managed to mention ambition, nature and sustainability and these will be given prominence in the final report. Yours Jules.

Dear Jules, thanks for your letter. Much of what you say was in your terms of reference. With regards to funding in real terms, is not all money real? I probably won’t be here to see it through unless Boris decides to confine me to purgatory (DEFRA) for ever. One can only do what they can and with this in mind I shall create my very own natural habitat by consigning the report to the long grass. Yours Mick.

Wasn't it in 2015 that a certain CEO of the Broads Authority assured everyone that he would NOT be seeking full NP recognition? Gawd, he's had a good crack at it since then.

Now it's flying up all over the place, wasn't it "for marketing purposes only"?

Ah well, I suppose you don't get a knighthood for being in charge of a "member of the national park family".

Let's hope someone sees sense and stops wasting public money.

This is my personal view and not that of the forum.

Gary.

It seems to me that this would be an ideal opportunity for Dr Packman to answer and reassure his critics and stakeholders in regard to the faux BNP and related topics such as the proposed Acle NP visitor centre and the debatable underhand use of the BNP title for matters clearly not related to marketing, topics such as education and planning spring immediately to mind. Over to you, John, a straightforward response would be much appreciated.

Over time Parliament has repeatedly rejected calls for the Broads to be designated as a national park, should these historical decisions not be respected?

The silence is deafening.

One can only assume that the words spoken in 2015 were an untruth unless the record is put straight.

The silence is both deafening and predictable. I doubt that JP would wish to enter into an argument that he can't possibly win.

It seems that the OP missed his opportunity to put the record straight on this so I thought I'd bring it back to his attention.

The OP does seem to be posting on other threads.
