The Environment Agency are carrying out work on the crest of the flood defence in Fleet Dyke, from the beginning of their moorings at the top of the dyke, along behind the moorings, continuing along the footpath that connects with the moorings on the bend, and ending at the lower end of the latter moorings. The crest is being topped with a wide layer of crushed cement. It seems that it will take until 1 August 2016 to complete.

Why on earth this is being done, I don’t know. I asked the workmen and got the reply that they didn’t know either, they just did as they were told. One commented that it was a waste of *%**%* money. He didn't seem impressed. However, I suppose it could be improving access for disabled people, which would be a good thing, even if the visual qualities of the moorings and footpath might appear to be degraded.

Anyway, this first photo shows what greets walkers approaching the moorings on the bend, from the direction of the Bure.

At the top end of those moorings, there is a plastic netting fence, with information boards.

This is looking back towards those moorings, from near the upper moorings.

This shows the detail of the construction. Crushed cement being laid over what looks like a geotextile membrane. No weeding likely to be needed, unless, of course, there develops a layer of guano from the wildfowl that are attracted by free food from the boats, into which seeds fall and germinate  Confused

Anything that genuinely improves access for folk of all physical abilities or disabilities is welcome as far as I am concerned. It may look ugly just now but will improve a tad when the vegitation recovers.

I have to say Mr P that I am hugely impressed with your patience and photography skills, especially the birdlife etc on the other thread. Also hugely grateful for the information you provide. Well done Sire!

Trevor

You're very welcome. TBH, I was getting a little despondent over the negativity that seemed to be pervading the forum (and not just this one). I'm as much to blame as anyone.

Then we had five days on the boat and, for some unknown reason, they were just about the best days we've had. That perked me up no end, and I thought I would share. I've a couple more threads to post yet, but have run out of time for today.
