I am running Windows Defender virus scan which appears to do the job.

However, and this is quite a common thing, I have instigated the recommended virus scan and it has been going on for over six hours!

What the heck is going on here?

I don't use Windows Defender for that reason.
There is an excellent piece of free software developed and run by some geeks in USA university. I run it once a month. It loads updates to fight any new spyware / malware that appears on the net and takes about 30 minutes to do a scan. It finds and eradicates stuff that Defender and other anti virus software misses.
It's called Spybot Search and Destroy you can get a paid for download with all the bells and whistles but I find the free download is good enough, you can send them a donation if you want
Good Luck

Although Windows Defender is better than it was a few years ago, I wouldn't trust it to protect my computer. If you want a free one you could try AVG Antivirus or Avast, both very popular. Personally I use Trend Micro Maximum Security with a 5-user licence. Another popular paid one is Kaspersky.
