Does anyone know of a rigger who could come to Hickling and take a look at my furler?  I have just bought a Skipper 17 and I am busy sorting it out.  The furler makes a clonking noise with every turn of the drum and I really don't fancy the mast on my head!

My guess is that it will be cheaper ,and easier, to take the mast down, remove the whole thing and then take it into someone like Jeckells - the sailmakers bit behind the Model Railway place in Wroxham.

They can probably sort it out on the spot whereas to get them out to Hickling, probably at least twice, might be more difficult. Alternatively talk to the guys at Whispering Reeds for advice.

To test it safely off the boat connect it to a tow bar or tow point on two cars parked suitably apart, lay a tarp on the ground to rest the sail. Are you sure it’s not meant to make a noise, bearing or ratchet click eg, or is it furling in the wrong direction possibly? I know you get what you pay for but might it be cheaper to buy a replacement drum, they start at less than £100. If the fore stay is through the whole gear then I doubt the issue will cause the rig to collapse, more likely a stuck or flogging jib.

Anyhow, when it’s sorted enjoy, nice place to sail even if on mainsail only!

If you have a spare halyard connect it to the bow cleat and you can then drop the furler, or maybe use the main halyard.

In a nutshell
The Moore the merrier.

Thank you all for your help.  In the first instance I will talk to the Reeds who have always been extremely helpful.  The boat is afloat at present so I cannot leave the mast down at my mooring.  It would be a shame to go without during the summer, better to sail like a Topper with just a mainsail than not at all.  If it cannot be resolved at the Reeds I will follow your advice when the boat comes out in the autumn, check it as you suggested and, if need be, go to Jeckells (whom I have also found very helpful).
