Good Morning,
The papers for next week’s Navigation Committee are on line.
The most significant is the report containing the recommendations of the Members’ Working Group on the structure of the tolls. You will recall this was trailed on the Forum and in the EDP in July.

Just what planet is the BA on. For the same size boat there is a predicted increase of £29.05 for a hire boat next year and a predicted increase of £68.28 for a private boat!!!! That against a backdrop of overflowing rubbish points all around the system, less moorings and increased late night cruising and speeding by hire boats. The Broads used to be special, it is becoming less so each year and rapidly reaching the point where it is not worth the toll. Can someone please explain why my toll increase will be over double that of the equivalent hire boat? or an increase of over 16% compared to this year. Be worth someone compiling a list of the phone numbers of all the brokers on the Broads. Might be a lot of boats for sale next year. There is only so far you can push people till they start to fight back or petition. Can someone remind what the current annual inflation rate is?

My boat is 29 square metres. I note that under the 17/18 proposals a hire craft of that size will see a reduction of £12.78.
I will see an increase of £38.40. On the face of it, that seems a little unfair. However, this represents in increase of just £0.74 per week.
I appreciate owners of larger craft will face a larger increase and may feel unfairly treated.
I feel greater increases should be aimed at HBOs who are building ever larger boats which place an even bigger burden on the system, particularly with regard to moorings.

It perhaps might have made a lot more sense if they had presented all the increases in percentage, rather than monetary terms, then again it would have made far more unsavoury reading.
Why wasn't the split point at which an increase, as opposed a decrease was seen, set at the same size for hire and private boats?

I did note with some amusement a comment made by the Broads Hire Boat Federation in the 2016 consultation.

It would appear that the BA have totally missed an opportunity to encourage the hire operators to build medium sized boats compared to the current batch of 45 footers. A modest £70 increase on a boat renting for over £2000 per week seems peanuts. A few badly moored 45ft boats and a mooring is full.

My boat isn't exactly large - a Bounty 30 -, but if this goes through, my tolls will increase by 14.15%.
At least Dick Turpin wore a mask! This is bare-faced robbery!!!

That statement is only true if you use your boat 365 days a year. The BA reckons that the tolls (and discounts) are based on the impact on the infrastructure and the environment. While your tied up at your home mooring, how much impact do you make?
If you use your boat for a total of 6 weeks in a year (which seems about average), your costs will rise by £6.40 for each of those weeks.

Palandine, If you include the increase for last year then it equates to 22.5% over two years for a 35ft boat. As a matter of principle I will not be paying. I will lift the boat onto the hard standing for a year first. The BA need to get into the real world. Any thing over the 6.5% increase of last year would have been a p155 take. 22.5% over two years is outrageous.
