Yachts attract a lower Toll for a number of reasons, Environmental and the fact that they produce less wash and hence less damage to the banks being a coupl. However many Yachts are equiped with auxilory engines and use them on a regular basis this and the fact that the Authority seems to spend a significant amount each year on dredging areas primarily for the benefit of Yachts seems to me to out weigh the justification for the lower Toll rating. Isn't it time that the Tolls for Yachts were brought in line with the Tolls for motor powered vessels? Dave

Without wishing to pre-empt the official response, might I suggest a review of the tolls structure as it stands at present? I think you'll find that yachts (sailing vessels in general) pay different tolls if they are pure sail or if they have auxiliary propulsion. There are strict limits on the power output of any aux engines, (10hp last time I looked) which, if exceeded will result in the aux yacht paying the same toll as the same sized motor vessel. Yachts also have to carry their sails ready for use at all times to qualify for the lower rates, so any yacht you see either without sails rigged (but not necessarily hoisted) or a motor above 10hp should be paying the toll for a mobo. Snag is, you can't see any more whether he's tolled or not, far less how much he paid. I'm less worried about whether or how much you've paid as it's a matter between you and the BA and none of my business - I don't think enforcement is my part of ship and am content to leave it to the authorities, just as insurance is your business and how much other expense you incur. We do benefit from lower tolls for the reasons stated, but do actually carry some significant dis-benefits as a result, like inability to punch some tides due to limited engine size... But if it changes then I will factor it into my choice of sailing waters....

Why is it that byelaw 72 and prop removal sprung to mind as soon as I saw this question?
Happy to support the honest and reliable pubs and businesses of The Norfolk Broads.

Afternoon Terry, There is a current Member review of the tolls structure underway. I don't think I will be betraying any confidences to say that, having listened to their debates, I have noted that the whole issue of different levels of discount for different types of craft has proved extremely problematic and I don't know how it will end up. Cheers John

The propulsion aspect IMHO is a bit of a side issue, what needs to be looked at carefully is the cost to the Authority of dredging in areas that mainly benefit Yachts and whether the cost of that outweighs any other consideration. A more even spread of the costs of maintaining the system would benefit everyone and would increase revenue that could be used to help fund further maintainance costs to the the benefit of all.

Hello Terry For my sailing yacht I actually pay the same rate / toll as the equivalent sized motor boat toll due to the fact it has an engine which is more than 10hp. I think you will find (certainly from my experience) that quite a number of sailing yachts are paying the same as a motor boat. Guy

but not all, as I said the engine question is just a side issue, the simple fact is that significant money is spent on dredging and bank clearance mainly to the benefit of sailing vessels, isn't it time those cost were apportioned evenly and all vessels charged the same? Dave

Difficult one - I draw the same as a Westward C31 Motor Cruiser (just over 3ft).

Yes, at just under 3ft draft, apparently not especially for me either, and of course being traditional we are helping to boost tourism, so in summary, I think they should be paying us
