Just recently people have very kindly posted about the tomb stone on the roof in Beccles and the Boots placed on the post en route to Breydon.     These are history or rather The Past.    Would that kind of item be included in the history section or does it have to be a particular date in time but referring to the Broads.

Time present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future
And time future contained in time past.

A good question.  Leaving aside the philosophy, which might say that 'History' is everything before the present, i.e. from one second ago.

Realistically, I seem to recall a while ago that 'History' was defined as being up to the end of the Second World War, and after that it was 'Current Affairs'.  But that was indeed a while ago, and such definitions can (of course) be argued over.

Another way of looking at it would be to consider the time before our present situation.  So, politically, you could reasonably argue that international relations have been relatively stable since WW2, with the exception of the break-up of the Soviet Bloc, but the previous period (pre-1939) had significant differences.

But, on the Broads, when was life different enough to call it a previous era?  Personally, I would place the cut-off date much later, perhaps the 1960s and 70s when there were loads of wooden motor cruisers vastly outnumbering the private boats.

Perhaps to be eligible for the 'History' section, it should be something which is 'no more', even if relatively recent (maybe only a few years ago).  For example, would discussion of the 'Barton Angler' inn (which closed about 5 years ago) be best in 'History' or 'Pubs & Restaurants'?  Of course, there are many historical monuments, buildings and artifacts still with us, just very old.  How old does something have to be to justly be called 'History'?  -  for buildings, maybe more than a century or two?

Again, speaking personally, I would think of entries in the 'History' section to be along the lines of 'Oh, did it used to be like that?', or 'Did that place look like that all those years ago?', etc., without a specific cut-off date.

Well Richard -  can you please define for us here please?

Will probably be an 'up there' subject very quickly.   So much richness on our Broads.

At The Ludham Archive we take lots of current photographs and add the Archive collection. This is because things can change very quickly.

To see what I mean take a look at this http://www.ludhamarchive.org.uk/roll.htm

I would not post recent photographs in this section, but I would certainly think it is OK to post recent photographs where things have significantly changed. Then its history.

Having said this, it is currently not possible to post any photographs in this section and so my use of it is likely to be rather restricted until this gets fixed.

Having given this a bit of thought I reckon that History is anything that happened before you were born, anything of significance  after that you will have experienced personally in some way or another.
