Age UK has been campaigning for some time to save the free TV licence for the over 75s.       This is a link from an email I received today.    I have given them my 5 pence worth of what I feel and think.   We need all of the signatures we can get.

Trouble is no one is interested in the old folk.  There a lot of elderly whose TV is their lifeline.   I supposed we could all watch ITV and the such and then not pay the BBC licence as not watching it.

Captain - you are a mere youngster.   I am 75 in August.     Thank you on behalf of our real elderly.

Don't you need a TV licence on boats?

Your TV licence covers your use of a TV on your boat (or caravan etc.) provided that your TV at your home address is not being used. If it is, you need an additional licence.

Pensioners do very well in the UK, including myself! If we lose the BBC we will pay more to get the service we currently get. Paying for SKY BT NOW or any combination of commercial providers will not be affordable to most if you want the full range of programmes.

Wasn't it a smart move by the Tories to pass the buck to the BBC!

Whilst I can understand that some people have spent a lifetime unable to work (the word is unable and not will not) and some in later years have had their livelihood disrupted by something out of their control I am quite in agreement that the free television licences should should go to them and good luck to them.

However, over my working life, I have often seen the attitude "spend every penny you have because the State will keep you if you have nothing when you retire". Those people and the people (I know quite a few of them) who have worked without paying tax, p***ed their money up the wall and now claim poverty on retirement will be able to claim for a free licence. That is what I dislike.

IMHO If you have worked all your life, spent your money sensibly and importantly paid into a pension then you should be able to pay a couple of bob to get some decent programs. I am a few years off 75 and have been paying for my licence anyway, whilst I live in a modest house, run a modest car and boat and shop in the cheaper stores and have a modest pension, I can afford it because I have not blown everything and am not sobbing my heart out because I cannot claim a little freebee.

Oops, have upset anybody?  Tinhat
