Good morning lovely people! I am thinking of cruising The Great Glen in Scotland next autumn, hiring a cruiser from West Highland Sailing based at Laggan Locks. I wonder if anyone has used this company and if they have, how did they rate them? Also, how great is the Great Glen? The scenery looks breathtakingly beautiful! No tv reception so plenty of books, deck of cards etc but are there many decent places to visit? I know that you all have a wealth of knowledge of waterways other than the Broads and I would be grateful for any info or stories you want to share!

Hi Pegs. We've done this trip 4 times over the last 12 years and have booked for next June. The first time we went from Laggan, but since then have used Caley Cruisers at Inverness. Can't fault them - boats immaculate and excellent customer service. The Caledonian Canal is awesome I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I have to put my hand up and say Caley Cruisers. We have used them and they really are top notch. Very professional and you dont leave Caley Cruisers until you really understand all about cruising along Nessy etc. There is quite a bit more to it than on the Broads. Wonderful experience and would recommend to everyone.

Thanks for your replies so far! The reason we were hiring from West Highland was basically financial constraints being on a low income! The boats at Caley cruisers look good so it may be worth paying a little extra,we've got a good few months to go so I can book and pay in installments! How far can you comfortably cruise in a week? Is one week even enough time?

We went from Inverness to Fort William and back in a week. We went in June so long days but you are restricted by the working hours of the Lock Keepers. You will be glad of the Lock Keepers as locks are very deep. You will not be alone if you are new comers as we had several in the lock with us each time. Lots of fun and we were lucky enough to be moored with some of the Tall Ships that were coming through. I worried about doing the Caledonian Canal, but some of the Tall Ships had come all the way from Canada. I have to agree with you that you need a small fortune to have a boat for two weeks from Caley but we managed a week. Like you we saved for 2 years before we went. Expensive but worth every halfpenny. Women dont nag they just point things out... M

You can do the lot in a week but it would not leave a lot of spare time. I have only been on private boats but good to hear Cally do a proper induction. The wind can funnel down the Glen and a force 5 to 6 which is nothing really on the Broads can be waves of of well over a metre on Loch Ness.
Captain Howe. The Eagle may soar majestic, but you don't suck a Stoat into your jet engines. Please leave the water and banks as you would wish to find them.

I would say that a week is fine as unlike the Broads you can motor across the lochs. Mooring places can be limited, but never a problem. We tend to stop overnight in same places in either direction, Drumnadrochit, Fort Augustus, Loch Oich, Fort William outwards then Fort Ausugtus, Drumnadrochit and Inverness homewards, mainly because we usually eat out. There are several other places to overnight if you are self sufficient. The main draw is definitely the scenery. Longer days if you go before midsummer does get dark earlier in the Autumn. You also need to be fairly fit as you need 2 people to pull the boat through the flight of locks at Fort Augustus. A really great experience, but personally I would save up for a Caley boat - certain boats do get booked up early though.

Hi Pegs, It is 30 years plus since we went on the Caledonia Canal, We went from Inverness but only get as far as the Laggan Locks, the lock collapsed a couple of months before our visit. Caley was the company we used and even then it was expensive even for the 25 foot steel hulled 4 berth cruiser we hired for the two couples and a baby. Our holiday started late Saturday afternoon but the locks did not operate until Monday, so we had a full day of hanging around at the boatyard. We hired a narrow boat on the Scottish Canals a couple of years ago because we could not afford a holiday for three couples on the Caledonia it was £3500 to £4500 for a week for a suitable cruiser in May. I hope you have a good holiday. Regards Alan Alan Hood Ranworth Breeze Boat Syndicate
