Hi Dorsethelmsman Do you know why they have a engine at each end of a three carriage train, no steep hills in Norfolk/Suffolk is there couldn't help noticing while sat at Reedham outside the Nelson relaxing, arm lifting. John

Maybe the Driver sits in the front one to drive into Norwich then changes ends to drive it back?

I was trying   not to go too far off topic but here is what I sent in an earlier PM (I sometimes make a donation to Richard when this happens )
Basically its a cheap option  due to the shortage of
diesel multiple units using surplus goods locos and
very old coaching stock.
Using PM as bit off subject there is of course  a
downside as it is extra wear & tear on the track but
is one of the downsides of the franchise and hire of
stock syndrome It features in the rail specialist mags
frequently

Equally off topic....
So whats the power to weight ration of one carriage with a deltic at each end? I'd have thought there is enough hp spare to jump the bloody bridges if they won't shut.

Back on topic.

Todays message from the BA http://www.broads-authority.gov.uk/boating/navigating-the-broads/urgent-boating-information/reedham-bridge-not-operational

I really thought that me email to Dr. Packman about the appalling communication from the BA about URGENT problems had got through.

Yet again, I was wrong.

WTF BA - Communicate, and justify that you are fit for purpose.

Back off topic.
They run two loco's because they have no DVT's available ( Driving vehicle trailer) as the London sets have so cannot be driven from the other end. Normally you would shut the rear loco down to save fuel .  The 68 set was being paid for by network rail.

It's not just the swing bridges that suffer in the heat the overhead line to London also suffer resulting in trains running at a reduced speed.

We just have the wrong type of weather in this country  Wink

In a nutshell
The Moore the merrier.
