AJB

A few weeks back there was much activity and woodsend, j*** was the vessel.
Two skiers being towed, no yellow flag - other skiers waiting on the bank.

We find skiing to take place quite frequently at the Woodsend area.
You can't miss one of the boats used it is bright red with stars plastered all over it.

But yes skiing does go on there.

Even if it was just one skier per zone the BA still have a duty of care to every other river user and would have to maintain adequate assessments for each area and monitor actively to ensure compliance to law and assessment.

Since April I have seen the launch out just 4 times out of multiple trips and not one of those times has been when there has been skiing.
I appreciate we could be at opposite ends of the patrol area when I am out, but then if I am seeing skiing and he is not then how is it being monitored effectively?
Again this is not a fault of any ranger, their areas are large and there are not enough of them.

If skiing is on the decline as you suggest then why is the BA considering extending ski times? If in decline surely making the zone times narrower would make more sense to all users of the river system.

If ever you pull me over for speeding with a speedboat flying past, then don't worry about it you would only be doing your job mate and if I had obeyed the limit you wouldn't have been tugging me over
Smile

Andy - your Southern Rivers experience owes much to the fact that summer really hasn't kicked in yet. The pattern on the Yare is that when its warm - especially in the evenings - that's when it get's busy wakewise.
The other problem for your namesake is - the presence of legalised sports vessels, makes the many operators of larger powered craft - and we've got a lot of very unsuitable vessels moored in Brundall Bay Marina and Hobro's - think it's also Ok for them to ignore limits and make excess wash. That means your namesake, Andy C, really has his work cut out. You are right of course - the circumstances compromise the ability to enforce, and there's only so many times you can 'have a word' with an errant skipper, before they click (as most of them now have), that 'a word' is about the only deterrent in your locker. Down at Reedham its just as incongruous. There the new Quay ranger incumbent seems obsessed with 'having a shout'. He shouts at everyone, usually those making no wash at all, but maintaining an extra knot or two over the tide to maintain steerage as they approach the bridge hazard. Of course that is ( ludicrously)illegal, by the equally ludicrous speed against the bank parameters.
In wroxham I've had paddles waved at me when my meta-centric hull wouldn't have created enough ripples to toss a floating cork, while 5 minutes later I've seen a daylaunch towing two lads in the water from sternropes, with their arms and legs just a few inches from the propeller.
Whatever your experience, there's a real North-South dichotemy, and until it starts making more sense, even those like myself, with a natural inclination to support the Ranger staff, will struggle with the credibility factors.

Anyway - consider yourself hugged!

Im more in favour of those litte Signs they hold up out the window at you Smile

Just back from two weeks on the broads (Proper write up to follow) and we had water skiers using the jetty at the Woods End Tavern whilst we were moored there for the night.

They seemed to have complete disregard for anyone else but themselves. The two blokes driving took great delight in buzzing the people on the bank to get them wet despite the fact we were moored ten yards away and it was throwing our boat about. I doubt bank erosion even enters their mind. We were moored there before they turned too.

It didnt look safe to me either. They took off so quickly and and a couple of times didnt seem to check if anything was coming along then river. One skier missed a dayboat by a matter of feet.

Given you are meant to have a permit I think there is little chance of them policing themselves on that evidence.

Obviously, bank erosion is a difficult thing to judge, but I noticed that despite the reedbeds flourishing along the Waveney there is a bare area at the end of the waterski zone near Somerleyton bridge. Is it linked perhaps?

It makes no sense to allow it on the rivers IMO when there has to be more suitable alternatives. If there are not many skiers, then why so many zones?

Realaler,

You may well be right about summer not kicking in yet,I was through the ski runs again tonight and again there was nothing.
As for the larger boats thinking they can do as they wish with just a rebuke, those days are over, all Ranger now have targets, ie cautions, prosecutions, Im fairly sure Andy C. will make great efforts to reach his targets.
The days of the "Rangers word against a boat load of hulabaloos" is gone, photographic evidence is now very acceptable, and generally all that is needed.

As for the lad at Reedham, I cant comment, but he is doing what he thinks right, not just trying to annoy people.(I hope ) Tinhat

Wroxham,.... it doesnt matter what sort of hull you have, if your above a good walking pace, I will point it out, if I then see 2 lads hanging off the back of a dayboat, they will be removed from the water or  removed from the dayboat, a lot of the hire firms are very happy to come and repossess there boats if we think it a good idea.

And yes I do feel hugged. Smile

Brian,

Im sorry to hear your getting fed up with Rangers shouting at you, I can assume from that you know all about excess speed and wash, and are sick of hearing about it.
Well worry no more, if I see you exceeding the limit or causing excess wash, you wont hear a shout, you wont see a little bat, you will just receive some paper work, and I will be a step nearer my targets. LOL

Andy

Do you not think the courteous thing to do would be turn the radio/cd player down so you could hear what was being said?

You have assumed he was shouting at you for going to fast, he may have been correct. On the other hand, he may have been shouting at you as you had just lost one of your children overboard.

I know that you know best, its what you keep telling us. I'm getting sick of "my way is best, by Brian of Rackheath". Get a life and when the BA, or one of its representatives, says something to you, acknowledge them. If it looks like you were going to fast you probably were. If you are in a "speed" boat any speed looks too fast.

If you are getting hacked off with being stopped by the BA take your "speed" boat to sea where you can go as fast as you want without being stopped or change it for something different that wont attract attention.

If it was me that a Ranger was shouting at, I'd be thinking quite deeply.

Brian...do you ever read or even think about what you post BEFORE you post it ?

I'm trying hard to work out if you're being deliberately contentious with your posts or you are indeed a genuine wally ?!

This post will probably get modded but here's some good advice:

Goodness me, i have a early night and the gangs come out LOL

THanks for all your kind words Smile

Like i say, i was doing 4mph in a 4mph area with sat nav to prove it (at the time)

So why the Shout out ?

There no real pattern to things. 90% of the time a Ranger goes by, i give him a lovely big wave and no shout out, still doing exactly the same speed.

As for one of my kids falling over, please do me a favour i do know where my kids are, its not exactly a large boat !

Great thread this one with O da Worde Right on Que LOL Classic !
