We have been busy moving Ra, our solar-powered trip boat, from Norwich to her new home at Barton. The journey was undertaken 'topless' without Ra's solar panels so that she could fit under the bridges en-route. Ra will be offering trips on Barton Broad in the future, with access for those in wheelchairs and limited mobility to enjoy the water. Certainly a talking point for other vessels on the river ??

Ah, that pic shows her at How Hill. Is she not going back to her old spot at Gays Staithe now? Karen

Yes, she's going back to Gay's staithe. When she was last there I was told she didn't recharge well due to the surrounding trees. It will be interesting to see how she gets on this time.

I understand Ra will be returning to Cox's for recharging each evening (as before). It stands to reason, if the boat is in use for several hours a day, using battery power (topped up by the solar panels), by the time it's finished its outings, the amount of power generated by the panels will be negligible. They don't work at night or with the sun low in the sky So the batteries won't be recharged by the panels.

Thanks Kurli & Pally for the info. I was thinking that, after all, we might get to use the side space at Gays And our fave spot at How Hill has been given away, so it's Irstead, Paddy's or the mudweight on Barton when we go up The Ant. Hey ho - at least for the time being we can go out on our boats. We have not used any public moorings and after seeing how busy it was last weekend, I'm much happier on the mudweight. As an aside. I though double mooring was not happeneing, and signeage was going to altered accordingly ( taped over I guess?) , but they were double moored all the way along Horning Green, and bows rammed together and crossing over each other at the pubs. The little dyke for small boats and day boats at The New Inn had 3 large hire boats crammed in too. As we haven't been toany public moorings, can anyone confirm if the BA signeage been amended , or not? Karen

As nice it is for the public to be able to have a trip on a "proper" broad rather than a trip around the "lake" at Whitlingham, it is now a third public mooring lost for the general boater. How Hill, Bishops Mooring and now the end of Gays. Humm Bet the BA do not add new to replace these lost.

Ah well the thing is Lord Paul- the BA think they've done a grand job by giving us the new Castle Moorings at Caen Meadow. A spot just beyond the Wroxham village moorings, and about 15/20 mins from all those Hoveton Viaduct moorings we allegedly don't fully use. Finger on the pulse eh!? Perfect solution ? Greatly needed new moorings in that location? Yeah right. Karen

Gayes side on is my favourite mooring on the Ant so I’m sad to see her lost (or one of them). Much was made of the “solar energy green powered” Ra when she was revealed , the need to plug her in was soon apparent so the solar panels are now more a sunscreen for the passengers than a provider of power , a bl***y expensive Bimini . She would be much better deployed on the closed Broads such as Malthouse where she would be opening up an area unable to be viewed any other way
