Boating News - The Authority has recently taken over Castle moorings (next to Caen Meadow in Wroxham) to be opened as a new 24 hour mooring later on in the summer.
Before it can be opened to the public we will soon be completing repairs to the 28 metres of quay heading, installing seven new mooring posts, installing safety equipment and erecting mooring signage on-site.
Work will take approximately 3 weeks and the site is expected to be opened to the public in late July/early August.
Please follow any signage provided whilst works are taking place and we look forward to welcoming visitors later on in the summer.

Thats good news - didn't think it was as big as 28m but I guess they have measured it.
It will be a nice mooring - at least for those of a shorter stature - under around 7'!!!

I think the frontage is about 17 metres, but there is a return at each end (unusable to moor against) which would make up the 28 metres.
But why on earth would the BA take the mooring over? It's only about 15 minutes upstream of the Hoveton Viaduct mooring and it's not so long ago the BA was talking about giving up half of that, because of lack of use.
There's only room for three cruisers, maximum. Perhaps they think it will make up for the loss of public moorings at more popular sites, such as How Hill and Gay's Staithe.

What on earth has possessed the B.A to spend OUR money buying a fairly useless Mooring North of Wroxham bridge, when we have all been crying out for a de-masting/ raising/ canopy lowering/ raising mooring south of Wroxham bridge.. They obviously do not live in the real world. Come on Mr. Packman justify your self and the B.A. !!!!!!!!

So do you know of any land available for the BA to lease south of Wroxham Bridge at anything other than hugely inflated prices - is that what he should do?

You are not wrong Marshy but that is no justification for taking over these moorings for all the reasons Pally has so eloquently stated. It's exactly what I was refering to in a recent thread. Losing moorings in popular places that people want to stay at and replacing them with moorings that no one uses.

I know there is no land available nowadays south of Wroxham Bridge, but the point I was making was the B.A are spending OUR Money as they do all the time instead of investing Our money in land for Moorings when there was some available albeit quite a few years ago!!!

Jason - believe me I understand your point, but to lease land for more moorings, you have to have two willing partners! In the past I know for a fact that some landowners have been less than helpful for any number of reasons! Usually money!!
You can only invest in moorings if it is suitable and the landowner is willing to accept the offer made in rent.Not sure that it is easy as you might suggest to be honest??

2 points Marshy, had the B.A. not given planning permission to allow residential development on Industrial quayside the cost of land would have been much cheaper and also available for lease.
The money wasted on the Dragonfly House/Yare House debacles would have paid for the purchase of both sides of the the Fineways boat yard.

I totally agree with you Terry regarding the points you made in both of you posts. I remember when a lot of yards in Wroxham packed up and developers were allowed to buy up the land for housing etc. With a bit of forsight the B.A. Could have quite easily have bought a strip of land at reasonable cost for de-masting etc. etc. But I am going back 20-30 years and I doubt if the B.A. would have even thought of it way back then!!!
