Was talking to a ranger at Sutton just over a week ago and asked him about replacing the posts to plug in for shore power and what they were being replaced with. He said he knew nothing about this and as far as he was concerned it wasn't happening!
He said cards were now dated so they would know how old a card was and whether it ought to be thrown away as older cards sometimes don't work.

Can't remember what previous posts have been regarding this on here. Anyone got any updates on this or heard any different from other sources?

I wonder if that was the same ranger I spoke to a couple of weeks ago at Sutton, who tried to tell me that there had been a court ruling making all boat waste 'commercial' waste?

While there are some very knowledgable rangers out there, there are also some who are either not kept informed, or do not inform themselves, about the intricacies of Broads management that we find so fascinating.

Edited to add: (Info. from BA - I've just rung the office) The date on the card is NOT to know how old they are. All the cards currently being issued are stamped with the date February 2017 (by which date the review is supposed to have been completed). That is the latest date that they are guaranteed to work for. That is not to say that they will not work after that date, but the precise situation will be subject of the review. It may well be that they will continue in use for a further six months or so, after that date.

DO NOT THROW AWAY YOUR OLD (UNUSED) CARDS. They can be exchanged for new ones. I'm in the process of finding out exactly where and how.

I have just received an email from the IPC Project Manager at The Broads Authority regarding electricity cards.

I have a few and they are not dated but do have a code on them.      When I enquired I sent the codes to the BA for them to check.

This was the reply.

I’ve checked here and have been told that electricity cards do not expire so the ones you have should work fine for when you are out in June. I understand there are plans to replace the cards in the medium to long term, but there are no plans for any changes this summer.

Hello Paladine,

If you just contact the Broads Authority and speak to someone there they will put you to the correct department.

A few years ago I had 29 cards that would not give credit, I phoned them up and they just sent me replacement cards. I did not have to return the none working cards.

Some card readers are worse than others and need trying a number of times before they work.

Regards
Alan

Hi

The BA have just installed a couple of posts at Somerlyton, confusingly marked post 1 and their other post 3, what happened to poor post 3  Question.

They are the same as the other posts so it would seem BA are sticking with the same style at the moment.

I guess they could just change the meter unit in the post to a different type though. I'd like to see one that will not go into a debit state, I know I won't use a £'s worth of electric overnight but it irks me when I have to clear someone else's debit even only 30 pence. I don't mind leaving 75 pence on the meter though Smile .

It would be good if they could just take what we use off a card and only what we use leaving the meter at zero when you remove the card, that would be fairer.

John.

Hi John/Captain-Joshie

Do you know if the new electricity posts are completed up and running?

I would be most grateful if you could advise so that I can update my website accordingly Cheers

Kind Regards
Alan...

Thank you, ranworthbreeze. I did phone the BA, but the man with the knowledge was out on site. I'm waiting for a return call. I know that the BA will replace non-functioning cards. Boatyards can also return them to the BA for replacement. I'm interested in hearing their official policy, as some boatyards might be less co-operative than others.

Hi

Yes working OK, both posts had boats plunged into them and all were in credit, which was a miracle!!

We hadn't noticed or expected the posts when we arrived and moored at what we think of as the 'quiete end' by the cut in where the bridge height gauge is and the posts are towards the roadway end of the moorings.

Also the rubbish bins are still in place, which is a good thing!!

John.

Thanks for that John.  I have now updated my site. Even B.A do not appear to have revised yet. Cheers

John,
I've never seen an electric post with more than a few pence debit on it. The electricity cuts out for us when this happens. Generally I believe we're up 4 or 5 pounds at least when using the posts as more often than not you can manage to find one with credit on it, especially in low season. Sometimes when I put a card in I only use 15p and then the rest is for someone else to benefit from - but I still reckon we're up overall.
Always be grateful to you for selling us our first card when we were new to boating. (He only charged me the correct cost - a £1)
