I understand that in a recent newspaper, under Public Notices, that there is a list of all payments made to Broads Authority members.

For example, two rather distant members claimed £989.13 and £1,333.82, respectively, for travel and expenses. This puts them 2nd and 3rd in the total costs to the Authority behind the Chairman.

One might be excused for questioning the value of these two well meaning folk. The level of their expenses suggests that their locations be rather remote from the Broads.

Indeed one of the two, at the recent BA public meeting in Beccles, very, very stoutly defended his assertion that the Broads is a national park, despite all evidence to the contrary. This did rather beg questions as to that gentleman's level of relevant knowledge.

Gravy train? Value for money? Valid appointments?

Maybe it is as well we did not vote these two into the Authority, otherwise they may consider, like MPs that they should have other expences rights, you know like a new BBQ and second homes, think what those exs would be.

Definately "gravy train"...

I think it is disgusting that our river toll gets abused in this way.

I for one would like to see the BA as people local to the broads and as showing an interest in the same.

Sorry for sounding a little ignorant on the subject but I am new to being a boat owner compared to a lot of you however the broads have been a part of my life for a lot of years as a holiday maker / hirer / family boat user...  So, is there no way we get any say in what happens to the river toll funds? maintaining the river, dredging, looking after the wildlife and the general surroundings... Surely these should be a priority?

Does it help voicing our opinion or does it open up a whole new can of worms and cause the boat owners more problems in the long run?

This maybe just the tip of the iceberg

This was just a list of members expenses for travel and expenses . What sort of income are they on from our hard earned wedge

Martin

no need to say that you are on your soapbox

that is what this forum is for

you may get shot down in flames sometimes but you will also get some that agree with your rantings

Carry on carrying on with your rants

it's what makes this such a great forum

Absolutely no need to say you're on a soapbox, Martin. You're entitled to express your opinion on here...that's part of the raison d'etre of this forum.

As FtM says though, sometimes not everyone will agree with you but hey, that's the beauty of debate. I reckon in this case though, there will be more agree with you than disagree, I'm certainly with you on this subject.

The BA do appear to regularly squander the income they get from us toll payers and they are hardly ever properly brought to task over it. Mad

So long as folk don't take the uric when claiming expenses then so be it. What worries me here is that DEFRA appoints members to the Authority and we have to pay for them, whether we want them or not. Some DEFRA appointees are excellent but these two are possibly the two least valuable members, yet they cost the most second to the Chairman. Living so distant to the Broads is not only expensive but also suggests that the two members involved are too remote to be of value. Its the system that concerns me more than what has been claimed. As is it provides exceptionally poor value for the toll payer.

Hi all
It could be that the expenses claimed were for travelling out of the area rather than to it ?(London meetings etc). This subject is yet another example of the lack of communication between BA and the very people who feel so passionately about the area and it's facilities. I'm still within my first year of Forum membership but it's clear from the history of discussions, the dissatisfaction amongst members and the lack of communication, that the time has surely come for BA to recognise the forum in an official capacity and regularly meet with it's elected members. There are enough wise, adequately intelligent, and reasonable people on this site, of extensive experience and knowledge of all things Broads, who should be given the opportunity to represent us on issues for which BA is responsible. Has this idea ever been pursued?
(ps, I'm not one of the wise, intelligent, reasonable.....)

Regards, John G
