Is it possible to turn a 38 footer at the end of navigation on the Yare at Norwich. Never been up this length; is it possible to moor overnight anywhere on this stretch – would like to do some fishing.

I thought the end of navigation was the Yatch Station - if I am wrong sorry.   If the Yatch Station is the end you can definitely turn round half way down the Yatch Station moorings.

Head of navigation for hirecraft is Bishop's bridge, private boats can go further and there is at least one pub which always used to allow boaters to moor outside overnight. The water buses which go into the city centre are certainly more than 38ft.

Sorry to be a pedant, but the Yare does not go into Norwich.  It goes south of Norwich to Trowse and such places.

The main navigation is on the Wensum.  The head of navigation for hire craft is Bishop Bridge, which is also the end of the Norwich yacht station moorings.  Turning there should not be a problem.

Private boats can go beyond to New Mills where there is a pumping station across the river.  The river is wide enough to turn there.

Thanks everybody for the replies.

I did mean the Yare. I have heard reports in the past that there may be obstructions, but never seen anything about mooring.

We went up the Wensum to New Mills in July.

cheers

Is it not The Wensum that goes into Norwich past the yacht station? I have taken my boat a 35ft all the way to New Mills. Past Bishops bridge there is no public moorings, although there maybe one or two places to tie up unoffically.

Hi Roy,

Quote "I did mean the Yare."  If you are thinking of Trowse water meadows I'm no sure of the current situation, there were some downed trees which were not cleared away for a long time.  Just before the Trowse road bridge there is a Y junction but it's very shallow and I'm not at all sure that you could turn a 38ft boat there.  Again it's beyond the limit for Hirecraft.

Hi Roy

10 years ago we took our 26 footer all the way to Trowse bridge but it was shallow and the trees overhanging were a nightmare.

As usual Bill's information is spot on.

I would think the new moorings at Whittlingham are about as near as you can get.

Thanks folks,

I think I will give it a miss. The other owners may not be too happy with a hole in the bottom of their boat.

regards

If you have a look here
http://www.photographs-r-us.co.uk/#/videos/4531894568
you will see the river Wensum up to New Mills Yard.

The Wherrys have been up there before now.

Providing you can get under Bishops Gate Bridges, the other bridges offer a bit more head room.
