Not quite the first time, as we visited the northern broads last year, but this time we have a full week and would consider crossing Breydon to visit the southern broads, but would appreciate help to make sure I understood the tide tables.
Ideally we would cross N to S on Monday 20th May 2019, and if I read the table correctly we would need to pass through Yarmouth at 18.58, which would give us time to cross and moor up before sunset.
Looking at Thursday 23rd we need to pass Yarmouth at 08.25 as the evening time of 20.53 is too late.
To reach Yarmouth at 08.25 we would need to leave Burgh Castle about an hour earlier. Bit of an early start!!
So, how did I do? Did I understand the tide tables?

You don't say what boat you have hired?? Unless it is particularly big, its unlikely you will have any problems, when heading south get to Gt Yarmouth at just after slack water and when returning north about an hour or so after slack water. Tides will be better that way for fuel economy.

Both you and VetChugger are right, in the sense that there is no absolute 'Correct' time to the minute, but there is a good 'window' when crossing would be most viable.
On 20th May, yes slack water is 18.58, which would be a perfectly good time to cross. But that's slack at the Yacht Station, the tide will have already started to run up the Yare and into Breydon, for best part of an hour, by that time. So, as it is heading into evening, I'd suggest getting to Yarmouth a little early (maybe 18.15 ish); you should have a slightly faster tide underneath you as you head downriver than the later arrival time. This will aid your early arrival time and save on fuel.
Assuming you are not wanting to stop at the Yacht Station, you should be absolutely fine. There will be signs telling you to lower windscreens, etc., as you approach. To be absolutely certain of clearance, that would be good to do, as well as giving you better all-round visibility (assuming you have a central steering boat). Of course, near low tide, there's quite a lot of extra clearance under the bridges.
Make absolutely certain that you go round the outside of the yellow post before turning right towards Breydon (it's really pretty obvious when you're there).
Coming back from South to North on Thur 23rd; yes, Slack at the Y.S. is predicted to be 20.53 (note that predictions will vary a little from reality due to rainfall, wind and atmospheric pressure effects). As V.C. says, normally you may want to arrive at Yarmouth up to an hour after Slack - which may make 09:25 in the morning a viable option, possibly starting from the Berney Arms mooring. However, if you are going through in the evening, getting there a bit before slack is not a disaster, maybe 30 to 60 mins early. You'll be punching the tide for a bit, or could pause at the Yacht Station to wait for the current to ease; it should turn quite soon and be helping you upstream.

Thanks for that. We will be on a 2-3 person cruiser so not a large boat.
My main concern is whether I understood the tide tables correctly. As a beginner, all the talk of low tide, at the yacht station rather than the bridges, and slack water with allowances of 1 -1.5 hours either side of one or the other leaves me a little confused!
If you or anyone who is confident with them has the time to consult the tables for Monday 20/5/19 and Thursday 23/5/19 and confirm the times we should be leaving Yarmouth on the Monday and arriving in Yarmouth on the Thursday, it would be much appreciated.
Last time I crossed Breydon was in Perfect Lady bermuda rig in about 1978!!!

If your heading south towards Oulton Broad then the first moorings you can stop at is St Olaves that’s a good two hours from the yacht station, if heading to Norwich then Reedham is the first safe mooring and that is one and a half hours from the yacht station. Crossing at seven in the evening does not give you much options if the moorings are full.

Thanks for the thoughts. Are the mooring before St Olaves and Reedham considered 'unsafe'? Is it because of the rise and fall with the tide?

Burgh Castle we’re closed due to being unsafe last year not sure if anything has changed, I have only stopped once at Berney Arms and it was not a comfortable night and not for the inexperienced due to the rise and fall of the tide.

I don’t think the mooring just upstream of Goodchild’s is totally closed is it?
When I’ve been past I’ve seen boats moored on a section that looked safe, maintained and not marked as closed.
