Hi, we are doing our first trip to the broads (well my second but I was about 8 years old last time!). We have hired a boat for 4 nights from Richardson’s in Stalham in a few weeks as a bit of a taster too see if we want to go longer in future. I had a loose plan of mooring at Acle Bridge on the first night before traveling down to Yarmouth the next morning (I get the feeling a lot of you don’t really like Yarmouth on this forum lol, but we have two daughters age 2 & 6 and I think that might keep them happy as I am a little apprehensive that they will get bored). The problem is that low slack tide that day is not until after 3pm, I was hoping to get a full day there and leave the following morning. After doing some more research am I right in thinking that if I arrive at high tide I should be able to moor straight at the yacht station without turning?? The air draught in the boat we have hired is 6’8” and the height of the Vauxhall bridge is 6’9” which seems a little close for comfort to pass under and turn at mouth of the Bure and turning at the yacht station seems like it could be risky?
The following day we plan to head back up the way of Horning/ Wroxham before returning the boat so any other tips you more experienced “broadsers” can offer would be appreciated.

Should you need to turn the boat around to moor against the current it is possible to turn before reaching the bridges. It may be worth giving the yacht station a ring for advice Tel: 01493 842794. You could also ring them when you are almost there as I'm sure the staff will be happy to help you moor up.

If you have to go to Yarmouth walk into Acle and catch the bus which is pretty regular and gets you much closer to the bits in Yarmouth you might wish to go to.
But as you say many dislike it as that bit of the river is the most boring in the whole of the Broads and despite doing it many many times, I still do not like it - its a complete drag!! Get the tides wrong and it can prove to be something of a slog too! They are pretty brisk down that way and punching a big tide is expensive in diesel to achieve not a lot - stay in the nice bits!
Much better with that age range is to stop off in Horning and take them to Bewilderwood and enjoy something a little different!!

To be honest I think you must be nuts ( not really ) to consider going to Yarmouth on your first trip to the broads.
The journey from Acle Is dull and uninteresting and the moorings at the yacht station are ok but nothing special.
However the main thing Is the yacht station Is quite some distance from the seaside attractions of Yarmouth beach if that Is what your children are keen on.
I agree with the other comments about getting a taxi to Yarmouth for the beach or go to bewilderwood at horning and wroxham barns and miniature world at wroxham to provide child orientated activity.

Arrive at Yarmouth at low water stay overnight all day in Great Yarmouth leave when the tide has tuned probably 5 ish .
If you travel against the tide it will cost a fortune in fuel and take forever.

The walk from Acle Bridge to the bus stop in Acle village is a long way for kiddies (there is only one bus stop)though plenty of X1/X11 when you get there Going Horning way far better I think & from Wroxham Stn to Cromer for seaside is 30 min train ride & hourly approx.

There is a lot of hate for Yarmouth on here  I am starting to re-consider though, I think we will maybe head to horning from stalham see how we get on the first day or so and take it from there. Yarmouth just seemed the logical place to go with kids thats all.
With this in mind any suggesions on where to moor the first night? I pick up the boat at 2pm so it will probably be 3.30 / 4pm before we are under way so horning is probably a bit to far to get to and find a mooring? Also is it worth going to both horning and wroxham in the boat or are we better off mooring at one and getting a bus/taxi to the other?

Don't be put off taking the kids to gt Yarmouth, but I recommend either getting the bus from either Sutton stathie / womack water (Ludham ) potter heigham, no6 bus service Monday to Saturday, but please note last bus back is usually after 5.30 pm , or either Moor at Acle or stracey arms windmill , and get a taxi from there , as said the journey there beyond stracey arms is a bit boring, plus strong tides currents to contend with when you approach gt Yarmouth, let alone the tide drop ,

Hi agree with all that has been said about taking a risk on your first time plus you only have 4 days to get there and back, best to book a mooring at the new inn at Horning and get a taxi to bewilderwoods for the day and then a mooring at wroxham for a train ride to where ever you want to go, as for your first night you could always try Gays staithe or mud weight on Barton broad, just make sure you have an evening meal on board for your first night.

It's not so much "hate" for Great Yarmouth, more concern for new boaters, and with only a 4 day trip.
I would say that if you really want to go to Yarmouth for the day , do it by car on the day you return the boat. Easier, safer, less stressful, and if you think the little ones could be bored on the boat , they most definitely would be bored on the long stretch to Yarmouth.
At the end of the day it's your holiday of course but I think you will find that the collective advice from members is worth taking into consideration.
Best wishes for a great time, and I hope the kids love it and want to return - it is a very special place in so many ways.
