Hi to all!

I need help please with planning a trip.
I am not familiar at all with the region, we are from Australia.

The plan is a family holiday, for 2 weeks and we will be taking my Mother with us. She has always wanted to do this type of trip, so now is the time before she gets too old.

What's the best way to see the best villages, best pubs? That's what she really wants to see god bless her, yes Mum enjoys a beer or 2, local beers even better. I have looked at some maps online, but I really have no idea what's what.

I would really appreciate all help given, even down to who's got the best deal for boat hire, or a good bunch to hire from. There will be 8 of us.

Then the plan is to follow that up with 2 weeks in France doing the same type boat hire canal trip. I know this forums for Norfolk, but if anyone can suggest any good ideas for that, feel free to let me know via pm or posted on the forum.

Thanks all! Smile
Krisb.

Krisb hello and welcome,

Pete's Cruising Guide is excellent for giving an idea of what's about in different areas of The Broads.

London Rascals site has some brilliant videos of The Broads.

Have a great trip.

Can I also say Alan's web site is also a treasure trove of information. The pub map is always a great help I have found  Smile . You can follow the link under his name on any of his posts.

Don't panic and put too much time into 'planning' your route. As I'm sure most on here will agree you very rarely stick to them if you do make one.

When is it you are coming to the broads? Also your budget will determine which is the best yard to hire from. All the major boatyards are pretty good and most hirers will have their 'favourite'.

In 2 weeks you will have plenty of time to see both the northern and the southern rivers. The most important thing is to slow down to the broads way of life, take in all the beauty it has to offer and relax  Wink

number of breaths you take,
but by the number of moments
that take your breath away.

Krisb, you don't say where your starting from or when but if you are on the boat for 2 weeks, you can comfortably do most of the System.

For the best of The Broads I would suggest a trip to Coltishall, Hickling Pleasure Boat Inn, Stokesby, Norwich, Berney Arms, Rockland Broad, Potter Heigham, Beccles, Geldeston Locks, Reedham Ferry, Surlingham Ferry and Wroxham. All, in their own peculiar ways, iconic Broads locations.

Thanks for the reply's guys!

We have no real idea where we plan to start from, or where we plan to go...not such a bad thing for a relaxing holiday imo right?

As mentioned, we have never been to the Broads before, in fact it will be our first time to the UK, so rather than just 'winging' it, I figure getting some help and advice from you guys who know the place is much better.

Long as there's plenty of stop offs to get out in a town, have a beer or 2 and some local food sounds like the go.
(no, don't worry, not tourists getting drunk and boating of course)Besides the rumours, not all Aussies are drunk and dumb Smile

Anyhow keep the advice coming, I'll keep researching.
Thankyou for the links!

Cheers, Kris.

KrisB. If you want to be able to access some of the outstanding pubs and beauty spots on the Broads you will need a boat that will pass under Potter Heigham & Beccles Bridges. Ales to look out for are Adnams, Woodfords and Greenjack Breweries.

Jenny, thanks for the pointer on boat and bridge height.

I have been looking at that. Have seen on the boat hire site waterwaysholidays.com and noticed this is the issue with most of the newer boats and some of the bigger older boats. Will keep this in mind when deciding!

With regards to the weather and boats, what's the best balance of good weather and not too packed with boats time of year in your opinion?

One more question is how do we get there?
If we fly into Heathrow, which is the usual airport for overseas arrivals, from there what's the best route?...I take it we need to fly out again?

Thanks again Smile

No you don't need a connecting flight to Norfolk though you could get one to Norwich, the easiest way would be a train to central London then the Train to Norwich after that it depends on where you hire from. Sadly there is no gaurentee on the weather but I would suggest Mid September, the kids are back at school, the nights haven't drawn in too much and the weather is usually reasonable.. If you want to avoid crowds, give July and August a miss although in theory these should be the best months weather wise.

Enjoy
