Hello all

Will be my first time on the Broads. Have hired Crystal Light from Herbert Woods. As we can not pick the boat up until 4pm. I was thinking of spending the first night at Ludham which I believe the stern on mooring is past Hunters Yard. First question is do you think by the time I leave Potter Heigham and get there. Will there be space available (16th May)? Second question how easy is stern mourning? My other half is telling me it is easy and that I should not worry as I drive a 44ft petrol tanker for a living. I did mention to her that I have never driven my petrol tanker on a river before  Smile  Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Andy

Womack is a sheltered mooring with little flow so a good place for your first try. I wouldn't have thought you would have a problem getting in at that time of the year.

Get in the middle of the water. Front mudweight down, gentle reverse, aim, a tickle more and back ye goo.

Buster Hi,

I see the That Crystal Light has the steering at the stern so you have the advantage of a great view when reversing.

I have found with many boats that the steering has little effect in reverse.  If this is the case I put steering on full lock to spin boat to line up for reversing towards bank, I leave the boat on full lock and very slowly reverse.  As the boat slowly skews round. I give a quick thrust forward to bring the boat beyond straight and continue to reverse in a slight zig zag motion.
Others may disagree but I find it works for me. Smile

There was a big article in The Daily Mirror 22nd March by Nigel Thompson about his trip on The Norfolk Broads.  I found his description of reversing quite comical.

Quote”That slot required a very tricky stern-on mooring and I can only liken it to reversing an articulated lorry with bald tyres on a buttered ice rink.  Still thanks to the Sovereigns bow-thrusters (bowel thrusters as the crew renamed them) and some help from other holidaymakers we got in”  Smile

Whilst on the subject of Ludham/Womack Staithe,  It does not appear to be on The B.A list of moorings.  Does anyone know if the local council own the moorings or if not who? Also can anyone give a rough idea of how many moorings are there?

Kind Regards
Alan...

If memory serves, Womack Staithe is a parish staithe and not under the BA's 24hr mooring umbrella. There used to be a small overnight charge, not stayed there for a while so can't say if that's still the case.

Difficult to say how many moorings available as each boat's beam could be different. An estimate would be in the region of 10 or so wide-beam (12') craft.

Many thanks. My better half has found out that there is a donation box for people mooring there next to the private mooring part of the Staithe

All the best
