We are due to pick up our Cruiser from Swancaft (Brundell) at 2.30pm on a Saturday, and I suppose by the time we have had instruction and got our stuff onboard it will be about 4 before we leave. We were thinking of heading up to Norwich to moor for the evening, is this journey acheivable, and will we find somewhere to moor for the night where we can walk to a pub for a evening meal. I then intend to turn round the next day and head back south. Any advice would be appreciated.

The general opinion is that Norwich Yacht Station is not a safe place to be overnight.

Hi and welcome! I would also personally avoid mooring at Norwich Yacht Station overnight ... especially over the weekend. It is right in the heart of clubland and it has an unfortunate history of having boats untied during the night ... and worse! If you leave Brundall and head towards Norwich you will find a couple of good mooring spots with pubs for the night. First up is Surlingham Ferry Inn (food is highly recommended) which is about 25 minutes up river. Next is Bramerton (about 15 minutes further on) .... there are a few moorings available at the Woods End Pub or plenty of free moorings at the common with a short walk up to the pub. Great spot for bat and bunny watching at dusk too! Norwich is a great city to visit during the day however, and the journey in is fascinating. If you moor at Surligham or Bramerton overnight, then Norwich would be about an hours cruising the following day .... stop for look round in the morning and lunch and then make your way back down the Yare. The upper Yare between Brundall and Thorpe St. Andrew (just before the city) is just stunning. Have a great trip! Carol

I think that it would be a mistake to try to get to Norwich on the first night. The first night on a hire boat is, for me, the hardest. I can never remember where I put the milk or the tea bags when we piled everything on board. So I prefer not to have to cover great distances on day 1. I'd recommend a gentle run upriver - it's really nice up there - but stop early, and then go up into Norwich on the next day.
