My last trip on the Broads was great, apart from the fish not co-operating but that is their prerogative and I am not the best fisherman but who cares?
My beef is that last year I had quite a reasonable signal over most of the Broads on the Three network. My old phone only did 2G and 3G and as I am not a person who is addicted to all the cr*p on the phones that was ok. I only did PAYG as that sufficed for me admirably. After the first Covid lockdown they appeared to have dumped most of their 3G signals, research on the net confirmed my suspicions. Even at home in quite a built up area the signal was very disappointing.
I found an amazing remedy. Its 1p Mobile. its ideal for people who just need a phone connection. They are a no frills genuine company, all you need to do is top up with £10 three times a year as a minimum, you can put more in if you want. Any excess credit is rolled over so you don't lose it. They charge 1p a minute for voice calls and texts and 1p per megabyte for data.
It piggybacks on the EE network so is much better than Three.
In an nutshell, if you are quite content with an old phone that is on the Three network and PAYG or even other tariffs it is worth changing to 1p if you are a low user. Just before people start shouting me down.............as they do, my phone is unlocked.

For years I've had a dual-sim phone, using Three as my main contact and Plusnet (which rides on EE) as a backup. Unfortunately, whilst Three was pretty good for the most part, it was completely dead on our home mooring in Horning. EE fared a little better, but still patchy in Horning.
Back in July I ditched the dual-sim phone and signed up with Talk Mobile which is part of Vodafone, but without the whistles and bells. It's good value data, calls and texts and riding on the Voda network gives me good coverage even in the Horning black hole. In September we spent 17 days going all over both the north and south rivers and I only lost a signal in a couple of very remote locations.

I have just signed up and will give it a go. The top up after 120 days rather than 30 is what sold it for me .

Unfortunately, my phone is a bit old and only does 2G and 3G frequencies. I will be getting a cheapie new one next year that will do 4G which the 1p Mobile will do.
There are still just about enough EE 3G emitting masts in the Broads area to give a reasonable service but 4G will be much better.

I have to confess to owning a EMUI Honor 8X owned by Huawei. I use PAYG put a fiver on about twice a year and it is fine. Mainly it runs off the home Sky system so need to put anything else on. As we are doomed to be stuck indoors for a while that is the way it will stay. Fabulous phone cost half neigh a quarter of some phones and yet does everything including 4G where it is available. I only put a fivers worth of internet on if we are going away. When I do even on the rivers I get perfect reception run by 3 mobile.
I guess it is all down to your usage.
