I have Vista service pack 2, 2007 and had no problems
with updates until now.
I have never set it to auto download updates as I prefer
to do it when I chose.
Only now it tells me I have 7 important updates and so I
click 'update' and away it goes.....
The only thing is that even if I leave it all day, it
says 'updating' but showing zero progress after being
left to do it for hours!
Anyone got any ideas?
Edited to add that I only run Windows Essentials which
updates ok. No other virus protection but I did download
Malware Bytes and then deleted it in case that was the
cause. but nothing changed.

I have seen reports of major update issues for Vista across the net. It is being interpreted as something to do with preparation for the download of Windows 10 (when it was free to upgrade)which is affecting the files. Anyway, here is a link to a geek site which seems to have it sorted: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/611898/windows-vista-update-hangs-at-checking-for-updates/

I have got an old Vista laptop which I sometimes use when I am writing websites and need extra computing.

It also has this slow update problem and hadn't updated since April. So I left it switched on for a few days and it did eventually download the updates and got on with it.

So just leave it switched on for a while and it should sort itself out.

Vista is going out of support soon although it will still work.

Sorry for this late reply David.
Tried what you put a link to and it didn't work either.
Nigel, I'll try doing what you've done and see.
Cheers.

You will need to turn the automatic updating back on. Don't manually ask it to update, just leave it to get on with it.

Of course all support for Vista with Service Pack 2 ends on 11/04/2017, just 3 months away. At this point there will be no more updates and any security issues will remain unfixed. Versions without Service Pack 2 are already out of support.

An update!
Tried what you suggested Nigel and it worked. Took about
30hrs to do it though. 4 updates were installed and then
the next day it said I had 14 more updates to install.
After 2 days I switched off the comp by mistake so it's
now started again. Well, that was 2 days ago and it's still
downloading so will give it another couple of days and
then see.  Mad

It's no good, Bill, you'll have to move into the 21st century soon. What will you do when they cut off the gas supply to your Colossus Mk. 1? Wink

Regards, Ray.

I've got a good little steam boiler going cheap.
