Saildroid has been recommended on here in the past. Whatever you use, make sure it measures speed-over-ground in tenths of mph.

I agree with the last poster (postee?) The "GPSpeedM" is good with speeds given to 1/10 mph. I have it on my smartphone and tablet. It agrees with the car satnav speeds.

I find View Ranger excellent because you can purchase their OS 1:25000 maps to turn your phone or a tablet into a plotter for boating, walking or any outdoor activity.
Chris. I have swallowed the anchor but have not tried mud weight yet!

Thanks folks! I have downloaded all your recommended apps, plus one I have just found call 'Just Speed', and will have a play over the next few days to see which one 'does what it says on the tin' best for me. Cheers, Chris

None will do true knots which should be speed over water but lots will do speed over ground in knots.

Hi James, Sorry, I have just come back from the Broads and picked up your post. My apologies. I used a number of apps to measure my speed and the one that suited me most was called "WhatSpeed". It was able to measure my speed right down to stop and has an icon in the top left of the speedo screen that switches to a map view, with my speed and direction showing as a blue line. I used it across Barton Broad and up past Potter Heigham and it's positioning was accurate. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=us.originally.whatspeed Regards, Chris I need a job; this retirement lark is far too busy!
