Can anyone help with the file Microsoft office searches for, to enable upgraded version?.... It's only a few Kbytes.... Had it on an old floppy disk, which has gone astray...

Hi,
Why bother with Micro$oft when there is a very good Apache Open Source equivalent in "Free Office" - sometimes labelled "Libre Office"?

'Open Office' does just about everything that MS Office does - and is Open Source - so totally free.
https://www.openoffice.org

I have it on all the PC's at work and all the PC's at home. I DON'T have Micro$oft Office on ANY of our computers!! It works on Linux and it works on Windoze Smile

I believe that all the files are cross compatible. Certainly we've NEVER received a file that wouldn't open.

All the best,

Malc.

I'll second that. Used Open Office for years, never had a problem.

Apache Open Office and Libre Office are different products although they do have the same origins. Both are free and both handle MS Office files very well. There is no need to fork out your hard-earned cash for the grossly over-hyped and over-priced MS Office any longer.

I don't think these replies about Open Office are responsive to the question asked.

I am not sure what file you are asking for, but if it was on a floppy disk then it will surely be obsolete by now. In Windows 10, there is an app (bundled with Windows) which does this job. You launch the app and then enter your product key and Office is upgraded. It can also install Office on a second or third PC.

I used this app at Ludham Computer Club last week.

Is this what you were after? If not, can you give some more information such as:

Version of Windows:
Version of Office installed:
Version of Office you want to move to.

Hope this helps.

Sorry Nigel but I am with the other lot, I got fed up with hearing shmbo swearing at ms office everytime she used it so installed open office and thunderbird, doubt I'll go back to ms office as it's getting more glitches with every so called upgrade.
She no longer swears at it.

I think the OP was asking if anyone had got a particular file which he needs. That's what I was trying to respond to.

As I teach at the Ludham Computer Club, I get to use all sorts of programs including MS Office, Libre Office, Open Office and more. I always think that the best one is the one that gets the job done for you.
My personal opinion of these free Office programs is that Open Office is better than Libre Office. Both of these are fine for basic functions but they are a bit more tricky if you want to get more advanced.

Dreamweaving, we still don't know which version you have and which version you want. I have installation disks for MS Office 1997 SBE and 2000 Professional. If you can identify the particular file, I'll see if it's on either of those.

You can load any office update if you've a previous version installed "OR" the verification file.... I've lost my office licence verification file, just thought a Geek might send me a copy lol

You mean you've lost your 25 digit licence code and now you want to "borrow" someone else's. That someone else has probably paid around £85 for.

Try Libre Office, much better than Open Office and reads/writes MS Documents.
