I have very good scam-protection and scam emails rarely get through to me, BUT I have just received one that appears to be an invoice. Fortunately, it's in Spanish and I have no Spanish connections (see screenshot).

If you get one of these DO NOT CLICK ON ANY LINK. I have visited the genuine company web site and they are aware of what is happening, and they say that clicking on a link in the email will download a locking virus!

My business email address gets thousands of these. We have several email address so we see a pattern of the same email being sent to several email addresses at once. That helps the detection process. It can be relatively easy to be caught if you are not alert. So far, we've been lucky.

One of the common fraud attempts (I feel 'scam' somehow dilutes the seriousness of the attempted crime) is a supposed contact from a carrier suggesting that they are trying to deliver a package. Easy to be caught if you are waiting for a package and are not alert to the attempted fraud.

This is one of the reasons I changed to the Linux operating system. If we accidentally click on a fraudulent email to download an attachment, we would not harmed by a virus intended for a Windows environment.

Unfortunately, the Police are not interested in publicising the huge amount of fraudulent emails. If everybody was aware of them, people would not get caught and the crooks would have to think of something else!

I've had people pretending to be the AA telephone me to "renew" my membership. I've had people pretending to be from credit card companies telephone me with instant "offers". I'm so cynical now that I don't trust anybody that I don't know. I always check the full headers of email to make sure that they are not forged.

This evening is the first chance I've had to look into this scam in greater depth.
Clicking on the link does, as Paladine says, download a virus onto your computer. This virus is in the form of Ransomware.
False invoices are accompanied by a link that redirects the user to a malicious file that hijacks user data, encrypting all files and offering recovery code only in exchange for a sum of money.
In light of Spanish holidays being taken at this time of year it is possible that you may receive such an email and believe it to be something to do with your holiday in Spain.

I get emails from someone who has been dead for 3 years which BT don't seem to be able to do anything about, I also get multiple offers from A1 companies I don't deal with, thats apart from the FBI, HMRC and uncle Tom Cobbley telling me I have been allocated Millions of dollars, pounds etc.

Simple answer if its not in response to something I have initiated I just delete them.

If I receive any e-mail that for instance requests me to log into a bank account or anything that looks to be an attempt to commit fraud of any type I forward the e-mail to

Which, unfortunately is a complete waste of time. I have had several long and acrimonious discussions with the police, who have now finally admitted to me that an outside company simply electronically scans all the emails and logs them.

I have forwarded thousands of fraudulent emails to City Of London Police, a great many of them being "spiked" with a text by me asking for a simple response - to prove that the email has been seen and read. I have NEVER received a response. When challenged, the Police finally admitted that no human ever reads these emails. The main reason for asking people to forward the emails is to present the "feel-good" factor - i.e. one feels that "something" will be done about the email that has been forwarded to the Police. Forget it! The department 'Action Fraud' in City of London Police is WIDELY known now as IN-Action Fraud! - because they do NOTHING!

The Police have a well rehearsed plan for dealing with persistent complainers such as me, when I question whether or not they actually DO do anything about the 80 million pounds lost to the internet frauds in the UK each year. (Police figures - not mine). they individualise and quote isolated incidents to justify their reluctance to do the job they are paid (by us) to do.

When officers have, on my insistence visited our premises to discuss another 1,000 or so fraudulent emails I've received, they become extremely clever at acting dumb - to such a point that I once said "you really don't know enough about the internet to discuss this!" When they readily agreed to that, I suddenly realised that I had been duped again by THEM - They were off the hook and could chalk up another victory in work avoidance.

The Police do NOT want to get involved with internet fraud. Their persistent inventiveness in creating excuses why they "cannot deal with it" is probably fraudulent itself. I have spent the last three or four years trying to get hundreds of different types of internet fraud made public so that people don't get caught. I tried contacting our MP.  What happened ???  My letter was forwarded to the Police. - The very organisation I was complaining about.

Our Police Service used to be wonderful! Unfortunately now, whilst the Beat Bobby does his/her best under very arduous conditions, the more senior police seem to spend their time plotting work avoidance.

Sorry to rant on about this but it has been a thorn in my side for 4 or 5 years that Internet fraud is on the increase and it so easy to significantly reduce by publicly warning people. For some reason the Police Crime Prevention section don't want to Prevent Crime!!!
