Unless it's a bespoke computer in which case you will need to have a full run down of hardware components

is it actually worth upgrading from W8.1? what makes W10 so much better than W8,1?

and any security software installed. These sometimes stop the installation so you may want to cancel the installation of Windows 10, reboot the computer, disable all antivirus/security software already installed and then install Windows 10.
I had to do this on my desktop as it continually froze. I disabled the security software and Windows 10 installed with no problem.
How can knowing the make and model of a computer cause the failure of Windows 10?

That's computers for you. Often the best repair is to hit the [start] 'off' button and restart.

As long as you don't mind having os changes forced upon you and being fairly aggressively snooped on and habits tracked, I've used a tool called 'Never 10' to block the so called update.

If you don't like what I say don't hurl abuse at the boat, I've sold it...

LeoMagill I don't no what you mean by forced on you , you could have stayed no the previous version you were using , maybe you could explain why you feel it was forced on you ? I was using windows 7 which I was perfectly happy with buy having red all the information regarding windows 10 I decided to give it a go , I must admit I did not like windows 8/8.1 went back to 7 and you can still revert back to your previous version, as for being spayed well cameras everywhere you go I believe the say we are filmed about 150 to 200 times a day , we all have smart  phones very smart keeping a eye everything we do and where we go , same could be said of all the tec we own that connects to the internet all sending information back to someone somewhere anyway that my theory be nice to hear yours cheers ...

forced on you, is pretty close to the truth. One has to work quite hard to avoid the imposed update. The message provided says when do you wish to upgrade now or later. until recently the x icon did not simply close and reject the option, as one would expect. if it had been a dodgy site there would have been loads of complaints.

In order to cancel the upgrade, one has to scan the internet for a solution.

The NO option is two layers down in the menu structure.
