I had a private message telling me what I had posted was a load of rubbish.

I attach the email from the computer company upon my enquiry.

*********** start of paste *******************

Dear Customer,

Concerning your message about the SonicMaster, I can see that your product had windows 8.1 preinstaled , it is posible that the sonic master was integrated into the audio driver for that windows and that is why you can't find it know.

I must also advise you that I can see in my system that your product had windows 8.1 preinstaled and know you are using windows 10. We give the products with preinstaled operating system because is the only system that we can guarantee the optimal performance on that device. If the customer want's to upgrade the operating system and doesn't downgrade back within 30 days he loses the software warranty and the recovery partition and if in the future he will have software issues with the device and he will have to send it into service for repairs he will have to pay for the repairs.

Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to get back in touch with us.

************* end of paste ************

So you can see. It is not rubbish.

I do not see why someone would want to send you a PM telling you that you are talking a load of rubbish.
What you posted is quite correct. Installing a new OS can invalidate the warranty as, installing a new OS can interfere with, corrupt or cause the interruption of the running of the computer by removing, updating or failing to recognise some drivers.
Depending on the specs of the computer, new OS can also cause a failure of internal hardware - such as graphic cards, for example.
Even opening the computer case can invalidate the warranty - static charge build up causing damage to the hardware etc.
As an post script, I too used to be a beta tester and it means nothing, other than being a Guinea Pig for Microsoft (no offence intended). Smile

Hi Clive I never said what you posted was rubbish , I said the warranty issue was rubbish and I stand by that , you have bought a new computer with windows 8.1 installed it has a recovery portion on the hard drive , if you upgrade to windows 10 and I take it your new computer is compatible I can not see how this would be a warranty issue , the only thing I would say is after the 29th of July when windows 10 is no longer free as a upgrade if you ever needed to recover your computer it would recover back to windows 8.1 and you would no longer have windows 10 , so if you then wanted windows 10 back you would have to pay Microsoft for a upgrade . So Clive I Really can't see what there problem is with you upgrading maybe it would be worth giving them a call because that really is ridiculous all the best ...

Tampering with any item under warranty - whether computer related or not - can, and often does, invalidate any warranty given.
It is not always the case though, it depends on restrictions and clauses in the 'small print'.

...he loses the software warranty and the recovery partition...

So, you loose the software warranty - not the hardware warranty. They're quite different things.

Often, more than hardware failure, it is the software that causes problems - corruption, updates, erasing, other software etc.
The supplier of the computer would have to see the computer before knowing the source of the problem. The OP may have explained what the problem was and the supplier suspected it as being a software problem. Maybe the OP will explain.

Sadly Edge is the one part of windows 10 that is a real let down , we were told about all the great features it would offer us and they just have not got it right , some of the problems have been addressed BUT it's still not working as it should , thank god there are a number of other very good browsers out there to choose from however it would be good if Microsoft could fix this problem .

I agree. Edge is not the best browser. Luckily, Explorer is still present in Windows 10 so I use that, or  Chrome. On my iPad I use Safari.
