Just got back from a week of our yearly dose of the Norfolk Broads, another fantastic week, which was only spoilt by the lack of phone signal, we have been coming every year for the last 30 years, the last 20 years with an orange phone{lately called EE)for the last 10 or so years including this year, we have also brought a vodaphone spare phone to supplement the often patchy signal with Orange, all the previous years we just got by, managing some signal nearly 60% to 70% of the time, one of the family also had an O2 and that was no good either, THIS YEAR the mobile signal for all 3 providers was absolute rubbish with signal worse than patchy sometimes going all day with no one able to contact us. We run a large family business where we need to be contactable most of the time. This year we were cruising on the northern broads.( Horning, Ranworth, Womack, Potter Heigham Ludham etc ) Does anyone know what's happened as we may have to rethink our visits in the future.

We too have EE formerly Orange. We noticed also that the signal didn't seem as strong as previous years. I think there was something in the local paper during August alluding to strengthening the signal, but as I don't understand these things,I didn't register much of it.

Hi

We live in Stalham and have a boat as well, we use Vodafone and 3 Network. But this is Norfolk so signals are poor in most places outside Norwich.

However I get pretty good 3G signal strength on my 3 iPhone4s in most places on the Northern Broads, less so on the wife's Vodafone iPhone 4s but having both does mean when I've no or poor signal Jo's phone usually has and visa versa.

Just buy a 3 PAYG sim and you should be fine.

John.

Kind regards, John(Captain

I spend most of my weekends on the northern rivers and with the exception of the Horning black hole, Vodafone works for me.

I'm not being facetious here but how did any business owner manage to be on holiday before the advent of mobile phones? Is there a chance that they had a more relaxing time and the business managed OK?

I use Three. I was at Womack today and had a reasonable signal. Seems to work in most places (not Horning of course).

You do know that there's major  solar flare activity just lately which will b*gg*r up all sorts of signals.
But you're on holiday! Who needs phones?

I use Vodafone and since switching to a Blackberry I get a reasonable signal more or less everywhere including Ranworth and Horning, I was advised long ago the handset can be as important as the network for signal quality.

Glad that I'm not alone - the 3G signal is RUBBISH on EE - and it appears it's about the drive for 4G that's to blame!

I think, therefore I sail.
