Well I'm out somewhere hot and horrible again with the RAF (7th month out of the last 12!) but this time it's at a Yank base, and that means that there is the opputunity for some cheap stuff from their BX! I've been thinking about getting a handheld GPS for a while for amongst other things using on board Gemini. Trouble is I know very little about them, which is why I come to the good poeple of this forum for some help! I should like to use it for the usual speed distace time stuff, but it would also be nice to be a able to log in favourite mooring spots, fishing locations etc (oh alright, where all the pubs are then!). There are 2 models available to me out here. One is the Garmin GPS 72 at £60ish and the other is the Garmin eTrex Legend at £65ish (monochrome display model). Quite a saving over UK prices that I have found. Trouble is both these models are North American variants which means that they have the USA as their "basemap". I understand that the eTrex is a mapping GPS, will I be able to update the maps to show the broads, and if so how much extra is this likley to cost me? Or is there a free set of maps that can be downloaded. The maps I have seen for sale far outweigh the cost of buying the unit in the UK. Other than that what are the major diffrences between the two and which, in your valued opinion, would be the better buy. As ever thanks in advance for any replies! Only a week to go till I'm back in Blighty!

As for pure GPS as far as I know it will make no difference as to which country the unit is from, the GPS is just a triangulation of satelites, pubs marinas and that are entered as waypoints which the unit can then track back to, as to a chart sure others that know more will fill in the gaps

We use a Garmin Etrex and find it useful for speed etc. It only gives basic mapping, not as much detail as a sat nav but for the broads the GPS is fine we have found
