Hi Chris welcome.
Oulton Broad is as nice as ever, though more private boats now.
Fishing on the Dyke is good.
Gill and i like the Wherry now it has been done up,but if Mick of moonfleet fame replies to you he is moored at Oulton and knows the best spots. Smile

hello , while on our southern broads trip last week ,we decided to go to Oulton broad . we were to meet our friend and site member mick ( moonfleet ) there. so we gave him a bell the nite before to tell him we'll be there the next day .he was staying at the Broadland holiday village there .we belled him the next day to say we were almost there and he'd tell us if any mooring was available there. well we was in luck ! there was some spaces . so we stopped there the nite and mick helped us in ,( thanks mick ! ) ,he told us what we could use there at our stop over as we've paid the mooring charge , we had use of the clubhouse ( good food ,and round of drinks cheap too ,and a good evening with mick and his good lady) use of the swimming pool ,playpark for the kids ,showers and launderette , fresh water and 5 minute walk to high st for your shopping or walk in the main park, have'nt stopped there for years but will defernately stop there again next year and recommend it to you memebers to try it , cheers steve and vicky This message was edited by steve on Aug-16

Hi Chris, Oulton Broad is one of my favourite places too. Like you I started visiting as a kid, in fact the first time would have been at minus one month old back in 1967. Visited almost every year for the next twenty years or so.

It has changed a lot in many ways, though in others it is much the same. The park is still there and as lovely as ever, the roads have been improved and a new bridge built, the boatyards have alas all but dissappeared. There used to be about a dozen, now down to just one or two. There is still powerboat racing on Thursday evenings during the summer and occasionally on bank holiday monday afternoons. There are still one or two good shops and of course one or two good pubs and after all these years I am still trying to decide if I like "The Lady Of The Lake" or not. The sailing club is still there, for now at least and so the broad is covered in sails when the wind is right.

Fishing, if you have a boat is best for pike in the entrance to the dyke, along the edge of Peto's marsh which is on the port side as you exit the broad. The dyke itself still fishes well for Bream, try around the bend or from the new BA moorings at the Dutch Tea Garden. Pike can still be found in the little inlets on the south side of the dyke but they are quite shallow so don't venture in if you have anything bigger than a dingy. Just out of the dyke heading towards Somerleyton there are severall small inlets on the right hand side of the river, old mill inlets. They fish well for bream especially in night sessions.

Regards

Paul
