Our BMC 1.5 was reconditioned just over 1000 running hours ago.
It appears to be using oil at a rate of dipstick top to bottom marks over 10 hours cruising. A rough measure gives that at about a litre.
What are others experiences of usage ? does this seem high ?

That does sound excessive. Over the years, I've had 4 boats with BMC 1.5s, including a twin engined job. I don't ever remember topping up with more than about half a litre between annual services. I can't be specific about hours, but we have always used our boats all year round and clock up quite a few hours.

Hi Pirate a 1/4" on dip stick is a pint always check when engine is cold, if engine is tilled rearwards have you checked oil loss through rear crank oil seal? alternatively it could be the valve stem seals, these can be fitted easily by removing the rocker cover then the rocker shaft, these must be fitted as per manual not just pushed on. Hi
As all have said a bit more than you would expect.
Does she smoke blue when running, can you smell a sweet bonfire on the boat when it is running or is there lots of black oil underneath the engine maybe in the bilge tell us What the oil pressure is when cold and hot. We might have an answer for you.

Thanks for the feedback sorry for delay been away in caravan (lots less problems than boats),
The engine had full recon bores, head, piston rings etc . No oil in engine tray so not a leak you can see and it runs clean exhaust except for puff of blue when reverse high revs which it has always done.
None of obvious problems which is why I asked if normal .

Hi Andy if that is the case i wouldn't worry just keep topping it up it wont make it any less reliable just adds 10p per hour to your running costs. DONT get thicker oil still use correct oil of good quality as per manual. John

What oil are you using?
Mine was using that amount until I started using the right oil or at least the right oil spec.
I use Morris golden film, 20w 50 and with the CC spec.
Important to use an oil spec that was around when the engine was designed.
Roll away the stone.
