We have a 1980 Bourne 35 with a sliding roof.
I want to paint the wooden strips along the sides with a paint that will give a wooden look.
I don't want to varnish it as I have seen it crack before and is a pain to clean off and redo it.
Thanks for any advice.
If you don't use your boat. Sell it.

Hi Jim I have had excellent results with Sadlins it doesn't blister or crack easy to recoat just rub down with those fibra pads, it doesn't dry rock hard but stays playable and adheres to the wood, the downside is it dosn't shine like varnish but gives protection to the wood and lasts. John

Hi Jim
On my boat I used Epifanes Woodfinish Gloss, which was explained to me by their technical department as a ‘clear paint’ , clear with no pigment in it not a varnish but give the varnish look and it was great. You use it just like conventional paint, no rubbing down between coats! When you eventually need to redo it, just rub down with sandpaper or abrasive pads (I used the yellow, medium grade, pads) then over paint. This was on the teak hand rails after 5 years! Two more coats and was good to go on for another 5 years.
This is what Norfolk Maurine product page says about it:-
‘Epifanes Woodfinish Gloss Varnish 1000 ml
A classic varnish-like oil based gloss finish with microscopic porosity properties. Especially suited on oily, resinous tropical types of wood and American pine as an alternative for the continuous maintenance of impregnating wood oil systems. Excellent adhesion to well degreased and sanded teak, iroco and other (oily and resinous) types of wood. If a maximum of 5 coats are applied, this oil varnish still allows the wood to breathe. Further build-up will close the wood.”
My experience of it was great, don’t have a boat now, but have seen my old one and it still looks ok after a further3 years!

I can echo annville’s comments above. I have used Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat on several commercial vessel name-boards over the years and found the product to be hard wearing and long lasting - which was a definite plus in the marine environment.

Hi Jim Extra springs to mind but not sure what they make now just read the tech info it also depends on what wood colour you want did my new shed with africa formosa it looks stunning shines as well, (extra)?John
