The hire company ‘allowed’ you to have your boat fixed at a yard of your choice? They had no option, it is your right! Subject to the evidence you have of the damage and its cause, you have a civil claim against the helm of the other boat, which is passed off, via the insurance, to the hire yard or their insurers.

Provided the repair costs are reasonable (some insurance companies ask for two or three estimates and there can be no 'enhancement'), you can claim whatever those costs are. There is no question of the hire company being able to put a ceiling on those costs. If they refuse to pay, you can go to the Small Claims Court, which can be mostly done on-line.

I pay a small annual amount extra to have legal assistance added to my insurance. I now have a solicitor (paid for through that insurance) working on my claim for recent damage (and injury) as the hire company is playing silly buggers. I wonder if it’s the same hire firm.

Been hit by another boat? Report the incident to the Marine Accident Investigation Branch’s dedicated accident reporting line on 023 8023 2527 which is monitored 24 hours a day.  Help to make the Broads safer.

Coot Too was damaged, while moored, by a Richardsons boat. Dissatisfied by the Horning branch's idea of repair I got it done at Sutton Staithe along with other work. I then told Richardsons that they owed me and they couldn't have been nicer, paid up in full, to the extent of asking if I had paid vat when I had not noticed that it was added at the end along with the rest of the bill.
