Over the winter one of my batteries seems to have died, and loses charge in a matter of hours after being fully charged. It looks like its water level is OK. It was fairly old (several years), so I probably shouldn't be too surprised that it's no longer doing what it should. What was there was a dual-purpose 110Ah Battery. It was primarily used for engine starting - I have a separate 'domestic' battery for all the other bits on the boat. I'm looking to replace like-for-like (at lest roughly. At the moment, I am not tied to picking a new one up from a waterside business in the Broads, but could buy one from anywhere and take it to the boat. Looking on the web, there is a huge choice, with quite a range of prices - how much do you 'get what you pay for', or do people have any recommendations you could pass on, please? The lead in an old battery must be quite valuable - is there any 'return' option? Or do I just take it to my local recycling centre?

With regards to disposing of your old battery, don't give it away to a re cycling centre. There are plenty of scrap dealers that will give you in the region of £6 for your battery depending on its weight. Don't break the battery open for the lead as the paste on the plates is highly toxic. The whole battery can be re cycled including the acid and casing. Of course, you will have to take into account the fuel used to take the battery to the scrap yard so its best to drop it in when passing on another journey.

In theory a 'normal' car battery is better for starting as its construction allows for a greater current pull when starting however in practice a duel purpose battery will be quite ok. Our starting battery is a 110aH duel purpose type and is now 10 years old. We did replace the domestic batteries a couple of years ago and got them from Boulters. As said keeping batteries well charged greatly improves their life, ours are charged from a 100watt solar panel when the engines not running and from the alternator with a Sterling controller when it is.
Best Regards Bob PO20 But NR12 as much as possible.

With a battery mainly for starting I was always told to look for the CCA,cold cranking amps, the higher the more power in the starting spins.

As with most Duel it doesn't do eather well duel is fine if you only have one battery.A MT/starter battery has fewer but thicker plates this gives more power for a shorter time a Traction battery/Domestic battery has thinner plates but more of them this gives a smaller currant for a longer time and can be discharged/charged more often without the plates buckling, there is a bit more technical to it than this but that is the basic difference. The scrap price for batteries now is not very high as the toxicity means that they have to go to a registred salvage operator.the battery seller will take your old one of your hands.gone are the days when we would stack them up until Xmas then take to scrap yard for cash for a share out xmas box.John

I sold three old car batteries of varying sizes last year and got £20 for them from a local scrap merchant. Another merchant nearby was advertising £5 each for car batteries about two weeks ago. I suppose they must be licensed so it can be done.
