Happy New Year all!

I’ve been a bit slow on the refurbishment over the past month, apologies for the quiet spell!
Things are pretty much as they were although I’m looking at replacing my windows when I get her out in to a hanger for a month.

How easy is it to cut change the rhombus window frame, which is rounded in the corners, to a rectangular shape? Is it a case of just fitting through the fibreglass with a reciprocating saw or jigsaw and job is done? Or would I need to the wrap over with one sheet of fibreglass where I’ve cut to seal it?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave I would seal the edges to stop any moisture/water running down between the sheets just the jell mix will be ok, are you having clamp in windows these are best and use a non hardening sealer, Sea Glace at Rackheath do a very good one it comes in rolls and has a tape backing which you pull of when applied to window edge. Be aware that if you use a jigsaw the inner sheet will flexe, vibrate, and may break/split,try and clamp the two sheets  together as you cut/saw. John

I would think very carefully before you take a saw to it, you could seriously devalue your boat unless it "looks right " when you have finished.
Just saying, you can't put them back, and someone has spent a long time designing what you have.
If you're happy crack on should be good fun. Not a difficult job if you have the tools and a bit of knowhow Wink

Thanks guys, I’m pretty handy and willing to give anything a go. It’s all just preparing isn’t it? I mean, anyone can do most things if they put the time in.
I’m waiting to hear back from a friend, who manages a glazing company, he’s going to come up with a few ideas in terms of which windows and for what price. Money has to come in to play at some point ha!

Also if you cut the fibre glass to a sharp angled corner it will be prone to crack at that point, thats the reason most windows, hatches etc have rounded corners even if it is only a tiny radius.

Dave

if it is to be it is up to me.
